Look for the stem end, and it should look like it was "picked" not broken off the vine too soon.
Place the heel of your hand on the melon and let your fingers fall onto it. Kind of like you're annoyed at the melon and drumming your fingers.
The melon should "thump" and you should feel some vibration as though it's thumping back at you. This is melonspeak for "I am yummy. Take me home."
It is a deep, hollow sound and feel.

I was tired of picking watermelons and not getting a good one, so now I buy the ones that are shaped like a basketball. They are good everytime.

Everyone has a different method..... A old Asian woman showed me how & it has worked EVERY TIME!!! Hold the melon to your ear, then with a finger tap on it, you want to to sound like a ting ting, unstead of a thump thump. A higher pitch, not a low pitch. Pick up a few & try it!!! I'll be able to hear the differance.

Mom always told me to get the one that sounds hollow when you tap on it.
Unfortunately, I think my husband has the sound for "solid" mixed up with the sound of "hollow". There can be 20 melons in the bin, 19 of them sweet, and he'll pick the unripe one every time, after tapping on them all.

It sounds funny, but look for the melons that have a yellowish discolouration on one side. That means that it sat on the ground ripening on the vine longer than the others and will be much sweeter and juicier than the others.

well, first you need to look at the color of the melon. if it is a darker shade of green it is more juicy and ripe. then you pick if you want seeded or seedless. I love watermelons...hope this helps. (suggestions: try eating it with a bit of hoiney and sugar.)

The rind should be smooth and hard with no soft spots. look for a shriveled stem. when you thump on it with your finger it should sound somewhat hollow. It should not have a disagreeable odor.
