I am going to get 3 moles removed from my back and one from my penis, will I be awake when the surgeon/doctor is removing them or do they put you to sleep?

Ordinarily, for normal moles, they would use a local anesthetic. However, the penis factor ... well, I'd ask them to knock me out.

I doubt they'll put you to sleep. They generally give you a shot of local anesthetic at each site and then remove the mole. There are a couple ways that they can take the moles off. If they're going to send them for a biopsy, then they'll use a scalpel. They'll probably either cauterize or stitch up the incision sites. Otherwise, they might freeze or burn them off.

If they're biopsied and come back abnormal (dysplastic), they will probably bring you back in to do a wide local excision. It's pretty much the same procedure, but the incision is bigger and will definitely require stitches. Depending on the level of abnormality, they will cut an area around the mole. Sometimes half a centimeter all around (a radius), sometimes as much as an inch. Wide locals cause a football-shaped scar.

Sorry 'bout the one on your penis. Not quite the same, but I recently had one taken off my nose. I've had a bunch removed in the last few years, but that was the worst one. I also have one that only my husband and my gynecologist ever see. I know that one's going to have to come off sometime, and I've been dreading it. I've had 8 taken off my back and neck over the years (plus 6 elsewhere), including 2 severely dysplastic moles and one early-stage melanoma.

It sucks to have to get this done, but it really isn't that bad. I promise. And If the docs are doing this, there's a good reason for it. Take a deep breath and remember what the alternative could be.

I've had some removed. I was awake, they just gave me shots to numb around the mole before removal - that was the most painful part of it. Not sure about the one on your penis tho, good luck with that one!

My husband has had them removed, and they've never put him to sleep. But I guess it depends on the person? I would guess that they wouldn't put you to sleep. Just keep your eyes shut if you don't want to see anything.
