You can't claim your wife as a dependent. You can file a joint return and will get one personal exemption for each of you. Financially the effect is the same but there is a significant legal difference. When you file a joint return your total income is listed on the return regardless of who earned it.

If you file separate returns, you each would claim your own personal exemption on your individual returns. Although you could technically claim your wife's personal exemption on your separate return if she had zero income and was not filing a return you would be paying much higher tax doing it that way. In any case, you would only be claiming her personal exemption. You would NOT be claiming her as a dependent.

Your wife is not your dependent - she is is an equal adult on your tax form. If she chooses to file HER taxes as ''married filing separately "' theres not a thing you can do.

Your wife is your wife. When completing your tax return you will always claim two (yourself and your wife). It makes no difference is she makes zero or $100,000,000.00 a year.
