I've been on a Carnival cruise. You need touristy clothes like shorts and stuff. All the toiletries you normally use. Comfy shoes. Take a beach towel unless you want to pay for one. Sunglasses. Any meds you take. A hat of some sort for the sun. Sunscreen. Pack an empty bag in your suitcase for souveniers. Don't forget your watch so you get back to the boat on time. A swimsuit. Your camera. ID, passport, birth certificate, certificate of marriage (if it applies). A nice outfit for the Captain's Dinner. And a LOT of money and credit cards.
You pay for the cruise, but alcohol drinks are put on the ship card. And anything from the gift shop, photos, or shore excursions.
Have fun, it's a total party!

first how long it the cruise? if it is 5 days or shorter there is only one formal night and semi-formal or just dressy, what ever you will have the most fun doing (I love the formal and there is always a mix of those in formal eating in the dinning room that night) 6 days there are 2.
where are you going? how many ports? What are you doing at port? these will all play a small part example if going to Mexico and on a Mayan ruins tour you will want good walking shoes. but pack for number of days with 1 or 2 extra shirts to mix and match.
any beauty supplies you need, (they should have shampoo and soaps)
cameras and extra SD cards/film, assorted chargers
try not to carry anything on the ship when you board, have it all in you luggage except a small purse for id and passport/birth certificate, room are not open till 1:30 so anything you have you keep till then, you will be on the lido deck eating when you get on first.
remember this is a vacation relax and have fun
