G'day
Tentofield has a point. However, I believe that you have already collecting information given by KBear and all the earlier answerers.
I live in Melbourne and this is what I can tell you:
1. First of all... some people do not like the weather in Melbourne (you can have 4 seasons in one day). However, if you read the first article from The Age newspaper, you will find out that the weather is still more preferable than the other cities. Sure you can have 42C day in summer, but almost immediately you'll get a much cooler weather pretty soon afterwards. It is very rarely that you got 2 or 3 consecutive days of hot weathers (unlike Sydney, Brisbane or Perth). FYI, Australia is having winter season now.
2. Melbourne is a city of diversity. If you are a newcomer, and you do not look 'Anglo-Saxon', you do not feel like an 'alien', since you can find almost every race in the world walking in the city. They are both immigrants and overseas students.
3. THE FOOD!! Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Thai, All-you-can-eat, African, Lebanese, Mexican, Sea Food... anything else? All available and lots of them in a very-very-very affordable price
4. Pretty good public transport system. With one ticket, you can switch from train, tram and bus. They do not always come on-time, but still reliable and improving (www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au).
5. SHOPPING!!! Original branded clothing sold very cheap. There are even shopping tour, where the participants are taken to retails outlets just for shopping. Big temptations for ladies.
6. Night Life... hmmmm... I'll say the centre of nite activities will be Crown Casino and Docklands. Altho there are still plenty of cafe's and clubs scattered around the suburbs as well.
7. Tourist attraction. This is the area that I think Sydney is better than Melbourne, since it has most of it's attraction within its suburbs. Most Melbourne attraction are pretty much out of Melbourne, such as the gold mines in the cities of Bendigo and Ballarat, The Great Ocean Road, Lakes Entrance, Grampians, skiing in Mt. Buller etc. The 2nd links below will have the complete info abt Melbourne and surroundings.
8. Hotels... hmmmm... I suggest you to check www.wotif.com and www.yellowpages.com.au, since there are plenty 4 and 5 stars hotels in Melbourne. From Yellow Pages you can check the location of the hotels, and from wotif you can check for special rates, or you can also contact your local travel agents to compare prices.
Running out of ideas, but I hope that I can at least give you some more informations that have been provided by the answerers before me.
Good luck and welcome to Australia and Melbourne. I've been living in Melbourne for 16 years, visited some other capital cities in Australia and still giving Melbourne 10/10 for the best city.

Well the beaches are best in QLD... if you don't want the real touristy spots go to the Sunshine Coast. It is definately worth a trip to Stanthorpe too if you are around Brisbane. The blue mountains are great for an escape as well. Tasmania is not so popular with tourists but has some lovely spots. There are just so many areas in Australia that you can go - too many to list here. But if you want the beaches then definately Queensland is the go. As far as expenses go - that changes wherever you want to go. It depends what you want as well. Decent motels start at $50 a night while backpackers are obviously very cheap ($10 a night) or Hotels can be more like $100+. It just depends what you want. Have a great trip and say hi to me if you come to Brissy!

Gold Coast and Brisbane is in Queensland and Melbourne is in Victoria. GC to Brisie is about an hour drive up north.
There are heaps of amusement parks in GCoast. Check their web pages. Dream world is one of the good ones. Plus take a drive to Australia Zoo (late Steve Irwin) at Sunshine Coast.
There is a Versace Hotel and a Sheraton close Main Beach (suburb) Gold Coast which is close to sea world. Food is excellent in Main Beach.
Or you can stay right smack in the middle of Surfers Paradise. Either at the Marriot or Allunga hotel and apartments. (can get noisy at night) Or if you like to gamble go to Conrad casino they've got hotel rooms as well.
*all these hotel has a pool and kids club except for Allunga.

This is like trying to tell someone visiting the USA where to go. Australia is bigger than the USA and has as much to see. I suggest yiou read something about Australia first and then decide what you would like to see. Bill Bryson's book "Down Under" would be a good place to start.
When you have decided where you want to go, you will find there are many people willing to give you details about those places but at the moment it is like telling you all about Chicago when you want to go to New Orleans.
The places I like might not be those you like and vice versa. To me a week on the Gold Coast would be hell on earth yet many people like it there. There are good hotels in all the capital cities and tourist spots.
By the way, in Australia it is called transport. Transportation was the sentence handed out to many of the early settlers of this country and it still has that meaning.
