Go full suspension for your budget and type of riding.

Gary Fisher is fine with their geometry if you have a long torso and short legs (I don't mean that your knuckles drag on the floor ;) )

Also, check for Santa Cruz Heckler. It's an awesome bike, probably stronger than the Hi Fi, has been around for longer, and can be built later very sweet. There is a complete bike for aroun 1,800, but it probably worth it if you could strech your budget.

Whatever, try to at least test the bikes before you buy.

You got some options:
1. Cannondale Rush - amazing full suspension that are in your price range. (I think you can get them around 1500$).
2 Another good option will be the Trek Fuel 80 - I rode them for 3 years and again you get lots of bike for each dollar.
3. Gary fisher HiFi are also very nice.
The best think you can do is test drive each pair and just go with the one that you feel fit you the best.

im a big fan of Cannondales and GF's are ok i guess but only really the higher end models in my opinion. i own a Klein that i bought in your price range, its the AttitudeV with discs, it rocks, i thrash it hard and take it anywhere (all mt.) and its a hard tail, id say stick with a HT especially in that pricerange. Go check out the Klein website although its not as good as it used to be.
