Sugarcane is a monocot. Monocots (typically) do not have lateral buds,(or, "lateral meristems.")

Because it's like bamboo and reed... and if it had brances I think it's no sugarcane anymore...

Corn doesn't have branches either. Just leaves. Cane is a type of bamboo. BTW: I prefer cane syrup over maple.
