Also We work 8 to 5 during week. We play with or Maltese Everyday and would do the same if we get a Westie. We leave the Maltese out all day in our home and he does fine. Would the Westie manage the same?

Probably.
Keep them seperated at first so you can see how they get along when you are with them. Dogs are pack animals and will take thier cue from thier pack leader (you).
Treat them as equals in terms of affection and discipline when you are home with them. Don't favor the maltese or he will take this as your giving up dominance to him.
Don't allow them to fight or be aggressive towards each other or possessive towards you and they will get along fine.

My aunt has a westie and a maltese. They took a bit of time getting used to each other. But thats with any dog. If you give them time they will adapt to each other. But beware Westies are VERY hyper!!!

There's no way to tell.Dogs are like people you never know who they are going to get along with. Can you take your dog to meet and have a play date with the other dog before you bring it home? Most breeders, stores, and even the pound will let you introduce your dog to the new one before you have to make a decision.

Its not a question of breed, its about training and the individual personality of the animals.

Any animals we've ever put together in our home were never allowed to misbehave or flight, whether we were there or not.

i could think of that canines are like human beings and walking is nice for arthritis in small doses. Take him out some cases each and every week and for short quantities of time and additionally you are going to be nice:)

It all depends on the dogs. The only thing you can do is try it out! If your dog is friendly, and so is the other one, they should be fine!
