Not clear why you think psychotherapy won't help - the basis of what you get in an effective mental health institution will be psychotherapy! There isn't anything stronger than good psychotherapy, but perhaps you know that there is a lot of not-so-good psychotherapy out there (it's true). Counselling (as opposed to psychotherapy) is often too superficial for the sort of issues you are dealing with. I'd look out for someone who deals with both individual and group therapy and can help you decide which would suit you better. Sorry, I'm in the UK so don't know the right way forward in NYC.

You really don't want to check into a mental institution, believe me!
It's not like it's a hotel where you can just go in, but a place for people who have some really, really serious, possibly life threatening and dangerous problems and need the full attention of the trained professionals. If you have not been referred by your doctor, you will not be covered by medicaid or your private health insurance.
You will not 'find yourself' in a mental institution.
You do need to see someone professionally so you can find out what is holding you back - there's a lot more that goes on than just therapy or counseling. You might need behavourial training, which is more about learning how to handle situations than talking about a problem, or you might need medication for a short time. There's other things that might help you, but a professional will evaulate you and help you figure it out.
Go see a professional and find out what help you need, but please don't overburden the mental health professionals in institutions until you know what is the right treatment for you.
They are overworked and underfunded in a terrible way.

As a doctor, my best advice is the following: Make an appointment with a psychiatrist and let him or her make that decision. There are many, many teaching hospitals in NYC that can provide this type of service. If you feel suicidal, or that you are a danger to yourself or others, I suggest you go to the nearest emergency room at once.

Finding yourself comes with time and experience. I'm thirty-five and still don't think I have fully "found myself" yet. Either way, I'm not sure that an institution is what you are really looking for. Why not look into some type of retreat instead ? There are thousands out there with different themes - religious, spiritual, women's, yoga, etc. Try www.retreatsonline.com for some ideas.

If you WANT to check yourself into a mental institution to "find yourself" then you might BE crazy!
I strongly suggest you do something else instead: go someplace you have never been before, try something you have never tried before, etc. A mental institution is for the truly sick, and unless you are you have no business being in one.

its not fun being in inpatient. It gets real boring and sometimes the people fly off their handles and it makes it hard to sleep when in there. However it is a safe place and I do feel like I can get in touch with myself a lot better than on the outside.

Make an appointment with a psychiatrist and get evaluated. You can see a psychiatrist on an outpatient basis. It's not necessary to be hospitalized for that.
