Cancun Mexican Restaurant between 55th & 56th streets on 8th Ave.

I recommend the chili & a coconut margarita. Their homemade salsa is amazing.

The best Mexican food I ever had I buy from a lady 2 blocks down. She is there in the morning with an umbrella and a cooler full of fresh tamales for $1 each that will blow your mind. There are a zillion Mexican restaurants in NYC but if you want Mexican food, you want to find where the Mexicans go. Ask a Mexican guy. NYC neighborhood with probably the most would be Corona, Queens (7 train to 80-100th st.) Also keep in mind that Mexico is big. Is USA food New England clam chowder or Texas chili? More diversity in Mexican cuisine. Have fun.

My favorite Mexican Restaurant is Del Valle on Tenth Avenue and 47th Street in Hell's Kitchen near the Theatre District. This is a small, very clean, very plain and very inexpensive restaurant with wonderful food. The appetizers are $2 and $3 and the most expensive main dish is the seafood soup (delicious) which is a very generous portion and comes with a basket of hot home made tortillas and rice and beans or salad. There are five or six shrimp dishes - large portions - they cost about $12. The owners/chef are from Puebla, Mexico and their cooking style is Puebla cooking - they have a lot of fresh fish and a great chicken pipian (sp?) made with pumpkin seeds. The waitresses are very pleasant, but service here is slow - if you have to catch a show, skip appetizers and dessert.

If you want something low-key and a little cheaper, Blockheads (on 2nd Ave and 81st) was great. It is a chain with locations around NYC, but a local chain (not a big national chain) and a fun, mellow place to eat. Nice for Californians.

Del Fresco Tortilla is the best, period. On 72nd street between Columbus and Amsterdam. Doesn't look like much, but they are acknowledged as the best tortillas in N.Y.
