What would you recommend I buy with a budget of about 50 pounds? I am in Scotland.

Its a gift for a stranger who has done us a great service. Though its part of his job I'd still like to thank him as it means everything to us.

Chivas regal or Glenfiddich single malts are both excellent choices.

Most avid whisky drinkers in Scotland first of all miss out the "e" in the name, (The "e" makes it Irish) then most of them have done a sideways step onto Vodka. I well remember trying for a taxi and spotted one with the driver upending a vodka bottle as he waited in the cab rank, he sank a good half pint as I decided to hang about in the cold and rain for another cab.
I was advised to try one called Tea Bag, not rewally but the name is in Erse and I don't remember the spelling only the phonetics. I liked it - LOTS.

Regarding above answer, Loch Dhu is one of the most disgusting whiskies in existence. Fortunately it exceeds your budget.

You can't go wrong with a Macallan 18yo--although it may exceed your budget slightly. If you don't know exactly what he/she likes, I would stick with good speysiders. Islays are a love it or hate it kind of thing. Here's a good list to start with:

Glen Garioch 21yo
Macallan 18yo
Balvenie 21yo Port Wood
Aberlour A'bunadh
Highland Park 18yo

Glenlivet is also nice.

If you can find it on your budget, try LaPhroig

If he's a real whiskey man, he'll know it.

It's aged in casks that are left right next to the seashore on stands. People say you can taste the salt spray in the whiskey.

Of course, the world's finest whisky is Irish. Black Bush.

Please do not upset him by buying WHISKEY - that is IRISH !
The finest of the Scottish WHISKYS is a range of GLENFARCLAS - check the vintage or LOCH DHU, well these are my choices but if you are in a specific area check out the local product - some of these single malts are unbelieveable - unfortunately it may be the next day before you find out just how unbelieveable they are !! Happy research !!!

If he's a connoisseur he will want the real thing i.e. Irish whiskey. However, as you may be limited to the imitation stuff they cobble together in Scotland and call whisky I would seriously consider any Balvenie in your price range.

I would go for Ben Romach, if you can find any.
or visit the distillery its on Speyside near Aviemore.
for a more easily available brand i would go for Talisker.
