Is it true that housing prices are going sky high?
We would probably have about 200,000 Australian Dollars to put on a house. That wont buy much will it? I was looking at real estates sites last night and most houses i saw were arounf the 250,000 - 485,000 dollars (Australian)
And aged almost 40 I was hoping not to have to have a hefty mortgage over 25 years again.
Here in Uk our mortgage is less than 50,000 pounds and we only have 15 years left on it.
This is making me question whether a move down under is truly viable> What do you think?

I'd do it. Australia is worth it. My opinion though.

the lower priced houses are in the poorest suburbs with the highest crime rates.
$485,000 will buy you a nice new 4 bed house in outer suburbs such as Redland Bay, North Lakes, Caboolture.
i moved to australia when i was in my late 30's - best thing i ever did. Great opportunities & i live a wonderful life in sunny brisbane - no more snowlol.
before you can buy a house, you need to get yourself established with a job etc at least 6 months - pretty hard to get a mortgage otherwise. so look at house rentals first.
where you work dictates where you buy your home. you want to live no more than 30 min drive from work. brisbane has big traffic gridlock problems that won't be sorted out for awhile.

Australian housing prices have gone out of sight. South-east Queensland has seen enormous increase in the property market that few years after the 'boom', the housing prices are not tipped to come down. At least not anytime soon.

But i think if you are looking for an apartment, two bedrooms, you might be able to find one within 200K, although my bet is that it would be a difficult find. If you want a house, I think prepare to pay 300K and above for a house in a decent suburb, and most likely you have to go out to Zone 3, 4 or further away. (Zone 1 is Brisbane CBD, and then it spreads out). Zone 4 is about 30-40 minutes drive to CBD.

News tonight is Brisbane is now on par with Sydney
Maybe it's worthwhile looking past the capitals of the country,
and aiming for a lifestyle that is still affordable in rural Australia
Depending on the skill shortage - quality of life versus income
country towns still have much to offer!
