I have had it hammered into me all my life that we should respect other peoples views and beliefs, esecially the religious ones.

But why should I when those beliefs are so ridiculous and WRONG and a great source of violence and oppression?

Do Atheists have rights not to have their lives affected by what religious leaders say about drugs, immorality, abortion, for example?

Please share your thoughts with me, whatever you think

You must be very careful what you say or think where religion is concerned.
I have just been warned that I may be struck off YAHOO for saying that atheists should stand on street corners preaching that there is no god or gods.
Religious people can say or do both. But not you or I or anyone who is intelligent enough to think for themselves.
We are here merely to be brainwashed and suffer the fires of hell and damnation if we do not believe.
The cards are heavily stacked against us.
In the past Catholics burned Protestants at the stake, and vice versa. Queen Mary 1 was very good at it. Then there was the Spanish Inquisition. Priests etc can do what they like, atheists cannot. We must also be careful not to offend any religious person. It is now the law.
More people on this earth have died because of religion, either believing it or not believing it, or being of another religion. Trouble is: they cannot, and never will be able to, prove what they say and only quote the bible for they know no better.
They`ll never learn will they?
So there, See you in church, save me a seat.

Quote: "I have had it hammered into me all my life that we should respect other peoples views and beliefs, esecially the religious ones."

A: You are asked to *respect* others' views, not agree with them, since in your opinion, they can be 'wrong'. Similarly, other people may view your views as 'wrong', and that is why it is necessary that everyone respect everyone else's views.

Q:"But why should I when those beliefs are so ridiculous and WRONG and a great source of violence and oppression? "

A: Those beliefs being 'ridiculous and wrong' represent *your view*. Do you want your view to be respected? If you respect other people's views, others will respect your views, even though they may not agree with them.

All you have been asked to do is respect them - it is only *right* that you should speak out *against* those beliefs if you think they are a source of violence and oppression. You are not asked to follow those beliefs or not express your opinion.

Yes, Atheists have rights not to be affected by others' beliefs - within the democratic framework, of course. Aren't you exercising those rights? You should.

Btw, don't think Christians have it any easier. They are asked to *love* their neighbours as they love themselves, and *love* their enemies.

They can be asking the same questions you asked above.

What would be your reply to them?

Another great source of violence?

Atheism.

The closest the word has ever come to total destruction...

Was it religion's fault?

Nooo... The Cold War, nothing do do with religion.

Now, the issues you suggest...

Drugs: The Bible doesn't mention drugs, but anyone who takes them is a complete moron.

Notice how in the crime-ridden areas of town, the city where all of the murders are, the gang wars etc. are usually hotspots for DRUG ADDICTS.

See a connection?

If you don't, you're dumb!

Immorality: Uh-huh. This entire "I want, so I deserve" society is eating morality alive. Tell me; are you worried about walking down the city streets at night in, say, New York? Immorality is at a peak there, isn't it?

See the connection?

If you don't, you're dumb! (I love saying that eh!)

Abortion: Murder, plain and simple. Who are you to judge what is "human" and what is not "human". Even by the definitions of genetic science, the "thing" as you people call it is HUMAN.

Please stop mashing baby's heads.

Seriously....

Why would an Atheist not have that right?

I am a Christian, but I am well aware that Abortions, Drugs and Immorality effects Atheist's lives...

I seriously do not believe that just because somone doesn't believe in a creator, that it means they want to kill everyone and do drugs...

When someone says that only religious leader's what to stop it, they are confused...

Whether or not someone believes in Noah, Jesus and all that has no effect on Today and the issues in our country...

It all depends on whether or not you personally alter your behaviour because of what any religion says.

Respecting religion (or more properly the people who practice one) involves not discriminating against them because of those beliefs and refraining from ridiculing them.

It doesn't matter what religious leaders say about drugs/abortion/immorality or whatever they choose to attack - because these things still happen and they always will.

Having respect for other peoples religion does not mean you have to abide by its laws or tolerate being dictated to.

All of our life's are being affected by:
Drugs:Hepatitis,AIDS,Drug OD's,NA.,AA.,and much more.

Immorality:Adultery,Fornication,Poverty,Homosexuality,
Divorce,Child abuse,Murder,Abortions,Wars,Unforgiven,Abuse on the Elderly,and much more.

Abortion:Many of these are paid for by Tax Payers dollars.I as a Christian think abortion is murder. So actually its my rights that Atheist are treading on here.Millions of babies are killed every day just so someone can have thirty minutes of fun.May God have mercy on the lot.

My question is do Christians have a right not to have their life's affected by Atheist.Witnessing to someone about Jesus has never caused any of the above to happen to them.Your mess is generally picked up by Christians either through shelters or their tax dollars.

What I have said here is the truth. It was not sent to be rude in anyway. Receive it however you choose,my prayers are with you.

Sure - athiest have the right to not allow their lives to be affected by religious leaders. This would apply to your personal life. Laws and rules for society still need to be followed. If you think a law was too influenced by one particular faith, then you need to work within the law making structure to affect change.

tolerance is something that people made up. it is a lie.
To tolerate something is to allow something that you know is wrong.
If you are a athiest then you have no practices or religous rites to even care about. trying to convice someone of faith that they are wrong would be immoral to say the least. the Fact that you are so concerned with what the religious leaders have to say is evidence that you have a inner longing to belong to a spiritual community despite your anger towards them.

Personally I think religion is a big con but I respect others views as long as they are good for everyone. For example I do not mind Christians going to church since I can choose not to. But I would object to a proposal to force everyone to worship

We should all respect and love one another. I believe if we could do that, there would not be a great source of violence and oppression.
