My whole life I have tried to read the bible and either have not understood what I read or could not keep my interest going because of the way it is written. Does anyone know about any good books that describe religion or the bible but is on cd or tape?

Wheezy, I have a couple of suggestions. First, hearing it read well can make a lot of difference. I, too, struggle some with the King James Version. The link below is an online reading by a great actor, Alexander Scourby. You can listen to a little or a lot in one sitting, as you wish.

Second link, try reading the English Standard Version. It's in modern English that reads more easily, and also is more faithful to the Koine Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic that the Bible was written in that the KJV. (At this site are links to dozens of other Bible versions.)

Third, try reading something like Lee Strobel's "The Case For Christ." It combines bible verse with an explanation of the times in which the New Testament was written, and compares NT verses to OT verses about Christ.

Good luck and God bless.

I am not sure whether your saying you have trouble with your eyes or just want a modern translation?

Whichever, I suggest looking up Jehovah's Witnesses in your phone book would be the easiest way. You could go to watchtower.org but that would add another step.

We have for FREE a modern translation in English and the local JWs can get you the Bible on CD for people with vision problems, again for free.

We also offer a free home Bible study to help you understand the Bible. Within 6 months you will have a basic understanding of the Bible.

There are many copies of the Bible on tape or CD currently here in America for one to listen to. Suggestion; discern the difference between the scriptures and the Bible; that is where some changes to God's word are.

I bought 2 books recently one is compact Bible Commentary and the other is TNIV Study Bible. It translates very well what the Bible is saying in terms that we can understand.

Do you have a study Bible?
Ryrie makes an excellent one. And it comes in several translations.
The Bereans teach Bible study. If there is a Berean Bible church near you, it may be worth a visit. Also the Baptist, Presbyterian, and Calvary Chapels usually have good Bible studies in their churches.

You do need Bible aids.
One good one is Nelson's Bibe Dictionary.
You also need a good concordance.

But take note of the following Bible example concerning Philipp and the eunich.
You need Bible explained to you most likely.
If the person you chose to listen to does'nt seen correct with his teachings, you'll know, if you are indeed looking for the truth that leads to everlasting life.

Act 8:27 And he arose and went: and behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was over all her treasure, who had come to Jerusalem to worship;
Act 8:28 and he was returning and sitting in his chariot, and was reading the prophet Isaiah.
Act 8:29 And the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.
Act 8:30 And Philip ran to him, and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?
Act 8:31 And he said, How can I, except some one shall guide me? And he besought Philip to come up and sit with him.
Act 8:32 Now the passage of the Scripture which he was reading was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; And as a lamb before his shearer is dumb, So he openeth not his mouth:
Act 8:33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: His generation who shall declare? For his life is taken from the earth.
Act 8:34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other?
Act 8:35 And Philip opened his mouth, and beginning from this Scripture, preached unto him Jesus.
Act 8:36 And as they went on the way, they came unto a certain water; and the eunuch saith, Behold, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
Act 8:37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thy heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
Act 8:38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they both went down into the water, both Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.

If you REALLY want to understand the bible, try looking for some books that discuss Christianity from a HISTORICAL perspective. Get to know the politics that were involved in the making of it; and who those people were who decided FOR you which stories were the ones they wanted you to know about and what message THEY decided was "God's".

Then you can make your own decision.

Start with the Gospel of Luke or John. There are good online commentaries that can help you understand what you are reading.

Go to this site:

I've found it to be very interesting and honest in their understanding of the bible.
