Duplicated your problem from both Windows Explorer, MS-DOS, and even some cygwin tools. I also tried making a zip file named "con.zip" to extract to a folder named con later but I couldn't even name a file "con.zip".

Oh, bambamitsdead, you can set Windows to be case sensitive. Check out the documentation on Microsoft Services For UNIX (SFU). You can enable case sensitive names but Microsoft recommends against it as Microsoft can't really tell the difference, even if other applications can. The main issue to Microsoft is that you can have a file called "foo.exe" and "Foo.EXE" and the OS can't tell the difference. If Windows Explorer is used to execute one, you don't really know which would execute so virus writers could intentionally attack common executables. Other operating systems (UNIX/Linux) accessing a volume through NFS software would have no issues as they are developed to handle case sensitive names.

You could boot as many OSes as your hard drive will allow . It's only your space of available gigabytes which makes a limit. As long as you've free gigabytes you're able to make a new partition and install a new operating system. At one point I had Win98/Mandriva/XP booting just to give an example. The last installed operating system will replace the old bootloader with its own. So it's normally the last installed operating system's bootloader which is used for booting. Personally, I like GRUB.

It's probably a reserved word... often 'con' is a synonym for 'console' and Windows may expect this to be used only for screen input / output.

Windows is case blind... CON, con, Con, CoN etc are all the same as far as Microsoft are concerned.

con is from old DOS I'm pretty sure, along with a bunch of other, like COM1, or reserved names.
