I myself am a schizophrenic, but also go through manic periods. Most of the time they last about 3 days, though it varies from person to person. I usually don't sleep during them, and have lots of energy, moving nonstop and talking 90 miles a min. Its like I'm a machine that doesnt need sleep and cant be turned off. I usually come up with lots of creative ideas during a manic spell, and my house is usually spotless. My tips for dealing with someone when they are manic is to make sure they dont do anything to hurt themselves or others, and I would fix them some chammomile tea to help calm them some.......its not a medication so it wont hurt them and has no side effects. Potassium is also good for people who are manic, it helps calm you too. I wouldnt upset a person who was manic, that can be dangerous. Because their senses are usually very heightened, so they feel emotion very strongly. When I'm manic, I have a stronger sense of taste, smell, sight, touch, and hearing than others do. So things can annoy me more easily. If you want to talk further just IM me when you see that I'm online.

God Bless You!

A few members of my family suffer from this...and it is rough.

The symptoms we deal with on a regular basis (especially since one of them refuses to take any medication for it) are severe mood swings, antagonizing people to start arguments (then sitting back and enjoying the fight,) violence, like ripping things off the wall or throwing things, or extreme melancholy. Some days are much better than others. It seems as though one day or one moment they will be on an even keel, then the next thing you know they are flying off the handle.

I really don't know what tips to give you to deal with it. My family has never lived close to the family member who refuses to take meds after quite a few incidences. We did at one point, but it is just impossible to handle. Now that I am an adult, I tend to just keep in touch with letters and emails. I love her to death, but it's just too much to take.

It's 'manic' and you should take advantage of their heightened sex drive and impulsivity.
