The Coast Guard is a great service.
1. Right after boot camp, you will probably be assigned to a ship or a station. Both of these unit types require you to qualify in your primary duty station before becoming part of the normal watch rotation. You will most likely stand 1 in 3 duty until you qualify. So, in the beginning, one out of every three days you will spend 24 hours on the base at a station OR you will be standing 4 out of every 12 hours on watch when a ship is underway. So, in the beginning, you probably won't get 2 days off per week, every week, until you qualify.

2. Hawaii is a very popular spot. Most people who join usually ask for some where close to home. There are several billets in San Diego. However, there is no guarentee that you will be assigned to any one geographic location in particular. That's one of the fascinating parts of joining the military...getting to see new places.

3. After you qualify, you may have time during your non-watch days to go surfing. However, regardless of your first duty station, you will have days that you have to stay on base. In general, you do have time everyday for leisure activities...it's just not a guarentee. When a hurricane happens or the Search and Rescue alarm sounds, leisure activities kinda sorta come to a halt.

ME so much obviously DOES NOT have a wait time of not up to three months. If you're a Coastie Dankohner1 (which I doubt) you will have to learn the ALCOAST... This is taken straight from that message, dated June fifteenth. ME-A: More than 24 months 28SEP11, 03JAN12,01FEB12 12 A/D 12 A/D 12 A/D As you'll be able to see they're taking 12 lively obligation contributors consistent with the following three categories and there are presently 253 persons at the A institution record for ME. Not a three month wait time... More than two years wait time. Anywho, that was once to explain the opposite put up that was once so horribly wrong. At this time the one assured A institution is FS (meals expert). For that you'll be able to pass directly to A institution from boot if and simplest whether it is for your agreement. Everything else you pass into the fleet as a non-price and wait your flip to visit A institution. That is situated on a primary come, first served precept. Having a measure is not going to bump you greater at the A institution record. It gets you E-three. Again simplest IF it's for your agreement. What you're doing at the same time ready is finding out to emerge as a Coastie. What you do depends on the station/send you obtain. You will also be out at the ocean for a couple of months at a time, you'll be able to be tending buoys at an ATON (aids to navigation) station, you'll be able to be crewing a small boat on a lake or a river. Where you pass determines what qualifications you'll be getting. You might not be equipped to position your title on an A institution record till you will have met the ones quals, your command approves it and you have got been in no less than four months. There are a couple of charges that experience exceptions to that four month ready rule however you continue to can't get the ones charges assured out of boot camp. Best of good fortune.

My brother was in the Coast Guard and his first duty station was assigned by them. Later he was given a choice after he had been in 5 years. He always had duty 5 days a week for 8 hours. That has been a few years ago and could have changed.
