I wouldn't be too bothered by either, but if I have to choose I would worry about the Trekkie things.
Personally, I believe that pot is harmless compared to many other legal drugs and should be decriminalized. The science is in and backs me up on that one. A lot of people smoke a bit of weed and are socially acceptable. Some even become political leaders, entrepreneurs, teachers etc. They just don't openly admit it very often for fear.
I smoked a joint or two in my day, so I wouldn't be hypocritical and tell the kid no. I would just ask the he use in moderation and not let it interfere with his studies and life. Come to think of it, I would ask the same thing if he was a Trekkie.....
Whats more disturbing than a 16 year old son? A 16 year old daughter. I have a 13 year old daughter, an 8 year old daughter and a 6 year old son. I am not too worried about the boy, but the girls are giving me fits!!! I wish my teen was either smoking an occasional joint or Trekking.....it would be easier to deal with that than all her DRAMA and what she is trying to do.

PLEASE tell me you already know the answer to that one. There are many scientists, successful entrepreneurs and people at the top of their fields who are also Trekkies or Trekkers, some from as far back as when the series first aired. The only people who ever made an industry out of smoking pot were Cheech and Chong, and didn't Chong just get out of jail not too long ago?
Bear in mind that the Star Trek thing and the pot thing could both just be phases that your son is going through, but at least a love of 'all things Spock' won't get him arrested, or marked with a record for possession.
If you really want to know how weird, wacky and wonderful the TREK world can get, click on the link below. This is a documentary made back in the late '90's about the show, the fans and the people behind it...

You are in a hard spot I have a step son who would lie and steal from every one he didn't care who you were if he wanted it he took it. The boy was good he could be standing there with the goods in his hands and go on to tell you he didn't do it and by the time he was done you believed him. He finally stole from the wrong person me his stepmother I turned him into the cops he went to jail we went to court and he ended up in a military boot camp for 8 months. Did him no good! You see the kids in boot camp are just like him they play the game and get sent back to us. The guards act tough but those kids are smarter. They are going to be who they want an there is no helping they don't want it. I will say it has been a few years and the boy has grown up a bit but the trust is gone I won't take my eyes off him when he's here. He is a very smart talented athletic kid draws great remembers every thing he reads 6'4" good looking at the same time dumb as a box of rocks just don't get it. Kicking your son out at 16 is hard might want to check the laws, Talk with the youth services in your community they might have some ideas on what you can do Good luck

This is an easy one. If you do your research, the majority of the world has tried or even gone though a phase where they smoked weed. Some of our most respected leaders have had a joint in their mouths. Do you think they are also or were also Trekkies, I think not. Dont worry about the rolling the joint thing. Its a phase that most teenagers go though and who knows, could last a couple of years, just be a good parent and make sure he has good morals and it wont go too far. The speaking Vulcan thing........I would get him involved in a sport or something.......the Trekki thing will only get him made fun of.

I think the important thing is what motivates him to do either. What's he thinking, what are his values, are his feet on the ground, what needs do both or either satisfy. I can't judge because I don't know those answers.
Just at face value, marijuana is illegal, and I personally think it encourages a kind of passivity, but that's not true in all cases.
At least with the Trek (I assume) he's engaged, active, involved socially. There could be an element of escapism in both, but I don't know your son. So, it's not really about what it is, but what drives him.
(lest we not forget: some drugs are dangerous, Star Trek isn't)

I think the joint will give more problems during the next few years for a 16 year old boy. I am a father of two sons now 21 and 25 and as a recreational user of pot in college and grad school and into my late 20's I have to say I see more pitfalls with the joint than with the obsession with sci fi. Later in adult life the sci fi obsession could also become problematic. What teen aged boys and you adult males need is a strong Bible based Christian upbringing and mentors and friends along with something like boys scouts or martial arts to accupy them. They need to spend time camping hiking traveling to the great national parks, working with animals, scuba diving, flying airplanes, being student missionaries, building homes, schools, and hospitals around the world. etc. KEEP THEM SOOOOOOO BUSY WITH THESE VOCATIONS THAT THEY WILL NOT HAVE TIME TO GET INTO THE DRUG SCENE WITH THOSE TYPES OF FRIENDS.

Though I would not be too crazy about the Star Trek thing, I would find the fact that my son would do something illegal in my home (walking in on him) the most disturbing.
In general though finding out that my son had smoked a joint would be less stress on me than the Trekkie thing.

i would go for the second one, but on the other hand what´s so disturbing on both of them? as long he´s not dressing up like a vulcan and go about like that in life shouting : life long and prosper to everyone, there´s really no big problem. and for the joint rolling part, if he can do this and smoke it without disturbing anyone, and you don´t mind that he smoke´s at all, like cigarettes, then let him.
keep in mind it´s your kid, he´s 16 and Will try out almost anything. educate him about the joint part and the differences between hard and soft drugs. a joint being a soft drug.
good luck with it.
LIFE LONG AND PROSPER!!!

Marijuanna most of the time is a passing stage. Now, the Trekkies, they suck you in for life!
Ask yourself, would YOU rather toke one with him or travel to a convention?
Let me add this, would you be just as concerned with your son having a drink than smoking a joint? In my eyes there is no difference only that one is legal and the other is not. Actually I think alcohol is far worse on society. Its much more likely that Star Trek would be a life long passion that he would be obssessed with and could spend 1000s of dollars on. From conventions to collectibles. Most people past college, dont pick up a joint. They have that been there done that mentality. Thats if it goes that long.

Are you people serious??? Those that answered that the Star Trek thing is more disturbing must all be illegal immigrants...who gives a **** about the law and COMMITING a CRIME...let's worry about the kid that gets into fictional characters, that is much more dangerous! Get real!
