Holiness means to be called out and separated unto God. It is important because it demonstrates that a person is no longer "of this world" but has been regenerated spiritually so that they live for God. It is not optional.

Hebrews 12:14 Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.

Holy are the things touched by God.

Holiness is required to see the face of God.

And we will probably never perfect it in ourselves here on earth.
