Otherwise the Path to Herald Square then the D to Fordham rd and then the bus or a cab down Fordham Rd is probably the closest. Just check the MTA site for diversions, especially on the weekends. Can really mess your day up. They have good maps. Use the PDF version of the subway map, it has more detail (click at top)

If you're going to use the PATH system into NYC, that's great. PATH trains will leave you in Penn Station. From there take the #2 train Northbound to the Pelham Parkway station. The Bronx Zoo is a little walk from there.
