American Heritage Dictionary - a·the·ist (ā'thē-ĭst)
n. One who disbelieves or denies the existence of God or gods.

Why do you who profess to be atheists even bother coming to the religion area, let alone asking or answering questions? If you truly didn't believe in God, wouldn't you try to 'educate' & persuade those of us who you feel to be misled instead of being hostile, denegrating, demeaning, etc.? If you truly didn't believe in God, wouldn't you be apathetic to what us 'stupid idiots' choose to believe?

You Don't KNow**** - Not all seem to do so out of love. So many say nasty things like Adam G., Deke, Kallah, Ritz, any many, many more.

Adam G. - Why is there ever any reason to be rude, crude & socially unacceptable? How does that encourage anyone to think / believe the same as you? And, if you are tired of listening, why don't you stay out of religion & spirituality? Do you have religion & spirituality?

Deke - I have no idea what you are talking about. So, does that make you a hypocrite for doing what you accuse all of us Christians for doing?

Christtard - How can you be an atheists & religious? Since atheism is also without concrete 'proof', do you consider it a 'faith'?

Ritz - Didn't even know there was a Gay section, so you must be lumping us all together. Aren't you a hypocrite now?

Worst - Have you ever been rude to a Christian on YA? Please explain your analogy.

Joe D. - I may be asking a similar question to other posted today or tomorrow or yesterday, but that could be because I don't spend all day in YA. I'm not blaming anyone; I'm asking a question that popped into my head yesterday after being lambasted by atheists attemping to put me down, demean my faith & beliefs, and all without any backing. Just vitriol without reason.

How to spot an atheists - You just proved my point. And, are you a buddhist? Should the American Heritage Dictionary change their definition except for Buddhism?

Bio Major - I'm a biologist & have yet to see anything in science that when researched objectively wouldn't support creation. Give me some examples of some that won't.

But anyway, from a book off of my desk, definitions with decreasing definition of certitude:"
Law - a concept with a high degree of certitude, sufficient for confidence in its use for predicting phenomena, but not 100% of the time;
Theory - broad concept based on extensive observation, experimentation, or reasoning and expected to account for a wide range of phenomena covered by its scope; NOTES: observation & experimentation would leave both evolution & creation out of the theory category.
Hypothesis- a narrow concept, generally postulated as a potential explanation for phenomena & to be tested by experiment or observation;
Conjecture - a speculation, a concept akin to a hypothesis but not proposed for testing."

Paul S. - You must have me confused with someone else. When have I ever been hostile? Sometime I may explain a bit much, but not hostile.

Ok. Lots of opinions & rationale for hypocrisy. And it’s also obvious that about half of you haven’t even bothered to read the entire original question, addendums or rebuttals. Sigh.

I read your whole question.
Here is my answer: Because they can, and will. My suggestion is: When you see this happening, put them on your block list and don't let it bother you. Live your christian life and answer questions that you see worthy of your opinion. People get bored, and i got two more points for answering this question. woo hoo

You know this is a drinking question, right? Meaning it gets asked about once a second.

Now that I'm refreshed - as an atheist, I can say that for my part, it's not my goal to "put down" religious people. But when religious people insist that the earth is 6,000 years old, or The Rapture is imminent, or gay people are just faking it to annoy the pious, or whatever the latest nutty idea is, I have to put in my two cents, which is that these ideas are INSANE. I'm really not going to just stand by and let the crazies dominate their own board...lol.

That last bit was a joke. Atheism is a religious position. There are atheistic religions. We have just as much of a right to be here as you do. And it's impossible to be apathetic towards theists when they're on a crusade to impose their religious ideas on secular society.

Because not all religious people believe in a god- haven't you EVER heard of a Buddhist? Taoist? I can tell this is gonna be a long day already...

edit:

a·the·ist (ā'thē-ĭst) Pronunciation Key
n. One who disbelieves or denies the existence of God or gods.

Bud·dhism /ˈbudɪzəm, ˈbʊdɪz-/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[boo-diz-uhm, bood-iz-]
–noun
a religion, originated in India by Buddha (Gautama) and later spreading to China, Burma, Japan, Tibet, and parts of southeast Asia, holding that life is full of suffering caused by desire and that the way to end this suffering is through enlightenment that enables one to halt the endless sequence of births and deaths to which one is otherwise subject.

Buddhism (a religion) centers around Buddah/Siddartha Gautama- a man.

Buddah was not a god, nor considered to be one. Only enlightened. This is one religion with no gods.

Religion and Spirituality is a section for all people involved or affected by religion with some interest in the subject- nowhere in the guidelines does it say that a religion is required, and ESPECIALLY nowhere does it say that theism is required.

Let me try this again- you don't have to believe in ANY gods to be religious- nor do you have to to use R&S

If you can't handle yourself in public, Kathy, you're the one who should go away.

Open your eyes. It's not the atheists causing the problems here, it's the believers. If you'd stop being hostile and arrogant, this could be a civil forum.

I meant Christians in general, of course, but needless to say, you were hostile when you wrote this question.

Respectfully, I think that you really need to step back and look at what's going on here. Blaming atheists for the nature of this forum is simply dishonest.

No its not to put down, its to try and get solid evidence of the existence of god, you should be glad some people in the past have had the balls to stand up and question unsubstantiated dogma, I think genuine christians are very decent people who are usually quite respectable and wouldnt tell you to believe in their thing, but the big difference is those who dont believe, dont because we dont have faith to believe without question, so my question remains and will until you provide a shred of physical evidence for the existence of a god , any god, whichever one you like, theres plenty to choose from. But the really insulting thing is though , to a christian if you are going to believe in a god it MUST be yours.

Drink! We don't take kindly to your kind around these parts. We gonna run yous outta town!

1. This is an open forum
2. Most Atheists know more about religion than you could ever hope to.
3. We are spreading knowledge, while your religion spreads and promotes sexism, bigotry, homophobia, infanticide, ignorance, and the list goes on.
4. God is not necessary for Spirituality, heard of Buddhism?
5. We would be apathetic to what you stupid idiots chose to believe if you weren't the "stupid idiot majority" that cries to politicians to put your myths as facts in schools, outlaw personal rights based on your unproven hypothetically divinely inspired book.
6. You SHOULD feel dumb for asking this.

Personally, I have nothing against people believing what they choose to believe. I have alot against some people insisting that their way is the only way. I have alot against some people insisting that I am damned because I do not choose to believe as they do. I have alot against those who would try to rule and structure my life to fit what they see as right. So, I will not ignore such behaviors and I will object to them vehemently every chance I get. Jesus said, love all others as you love yourself, he did not say make them convert, he did not say make them follow your religion, he just said love others as you love yourself....I object to those who profess to follow a man's teachings but then turn around and pervert what he said to suit thier own purpose. Jesus had some really neat things to say and to teach, and I really object to what the various so called Christian religions have done to what he was trying to teach. I learned aramaic so I could read the original texts and most Christians in this world have no clue what Jesus actually said and what the apostles actually wrote, they only know what Constantine and others like him allowed to be written, and re-written. So before you ask others to leave you and yours alone, you best consider leaving yourself first. You don't have to post here either.

Many of us have studied most of the major religions. I know, personally, I get frustrated with many views of Christians because they put humanity in danger, but I try not to make any debate personal.

As far as trying to educate, yes, I try that all the time. I still have not had a christian tell me, correctly, what a scientific theory is.

Finally, I try not to generalize the behavior of all Christians and apply it to all of them as a group. Please show atheists, and everybody different from you the same respect.

I come for the amazement of how many people belive in man made religion and god. I also like how a man written book is made out to be the 100% word of 'god. Very amusing.

Wow, drinks questions already?? But it's early!

It's so cute how all you Christians try to deny the fact that this is an open forum, and how we're all just nasty and hateful, and how you're convinced that we all are looking for God by coming here.

It really is cute.
