It depends! Every phone company is different, and every calling plan is different at that company. It also will depend where you are in the U.S. And you can buy prepaid calling cards too!

At teltarif you can always find the cheapest connection dependig on the time of the day. But you can even phone for free if you use a site called peterzahlt.de. This means the person in Germany has to initiate the call though. They enter their number and yours, then hit connect and the phone rings on both ends.

You don't have to register. There are some restrictions (like you can only do it for 30 minutes at a time and not at all after midnight German time), but other than that it's pretty perfect. I used it ever since it started until a few months ago when my best friend mover bacl to Germany from the US.

Dial 10-10-987 then the the number and it will cost you 39¢ plus 3¢ a minute....cheap.
