You're not cringing alone. I work in an attorney's office, and its common for incarcerated people to turn to God, any God actually, christian, muslim, buddist (they get the best out of it, buddists get fresh fruit and veggies in prison), hindu's, whatever. The reasoning is that a religious person is a better candidate for parole. Of course, as with politicians and celebrities, that newfound religion is over as soon as the parole is granted or the publicity is gone.
Like someone else said, Sadaam suddenly found Allah, Paris finds God, Tom found scientology to cover up his increasing erratic behavior, whatever it is, they use it. Of course, I do get it that this probably isn't a legitimate question, but more christian bashing, so I answered on the off-chance its a legitimate question.

I think you question is your answer. People who do what you describe are using the Christian faith as a crutch to ease their own ego or to try and impress people. Hillary Clinton, John Edwards and others make the claim to believe in God and have faith in Him, yet their actions speak louder than their words. Paris Hilton used it the other day--it may give her some relief from here situation but it doesn't express any truth.
When you look at people of true faith you seldom see that happening. Peter Marshall, Billy Graham, Padre Pio, Mother Theresa, Pope John-Paul II, etc show the reality of their faith and don't have to explain it our use it as a "Get out of Jail Free" card.
Have you noticed that the people I mentioned above are never referred to in a bad light? Rather they have the respect of the world. Those are the ones you need to look to to see the value of Christianity. They are the silent ones doing the work of the faith with out any fanfare our calling attention to themselves. In fact they run from such values. It is that goal to which I strive as I live my Christianity. I don't always succeed, but it remains my goal.

all of us's a sinner, however the factor is that a "authentic Christian" is nicely-known with of this and could actively attempt to repent and boost. it is not likely elementary to call that an "get away clause." somebody calling themselves a Christian would not lead them to one.

The bible says that when a person is truly changed, they will show fruits. It's different to have strong Christian beliefs and to be a strong Christian. That's what I always think when it comes to things of this nature. Trust me, I hate it when you see someone win something, and they get up and say, I'd like to thank Jesus, who got me where I am today. I am assuming Jesus must have put that drink in their hand, or that pill in their mouth, he must have directed them right to that night club. God knows their hearts, and he knows who's true and who's just using it for publicity.

Because they know that there are people out there who will forgive anything if they share the same religion.
In the US that would be Christianity.
Saddam Hussein suddenly became a devout Muslim when he was looking for support from the people.

Human beings are fallible. Using religion as a social crutch is prevalent amongst all religious beings. Is prayer more of a "conversation with god" or a "justification and self-forgiveness of ones immoral behavior"? I would have to say the latter.

The "I'm only human" syndrome.
Adam and Eve tried that song and dance on God once. Didn't work for them back then. What makes anyone think it will work today!

That is true if you based righteousness from yourself. But remember that nobody is righteous except THE LORD GOD. Thus, one can become righteous only by the righteousness of THE LORD GOD -that is when HE robes you of HIS righteousness that someone becomes righteous. All are sinners On one hand, THE LORD GOD asks us to be HIS workers on Earth for the coming KINGDOM OF HEAVEN; that is what we have to mind for and not others who themselves are accountable for their sins/errors. Likewise, the righteousness of THE LORD GOD that will never end is that THE LORD JESUS CHRIST has already redeemed all our sins though how many sins you have. Christians today are under the dispensation of grace. Under the righteousness of THE LORD GOD the more sins the more grace abounds. That is the righteousness of GOD that we should seek and not our own righteousness which is self-righteousness. Similarly, King David was a worst sinner but he prayed forgiveness for his sins under the great mercy and love of THE LORD GOD. It is because salvation of the LORD GOD WILL last forever and HIS righteousness will never end. THANKS GOD; FEAR GOD; PRAISE GOD; GLORIFY GOD; HONOR GOD; LOVE GOD AND WORSHIP GOD.
