It depends on what you are taking it for. From Micromedex®:

-Genital herpes simplex: initial episode, 1 g ORALLY twice a day for 7 to 10 days
-Genital herpes simplex: recurrent episode, 500 mg ORALLY twice a day for 3 days, or 1 g once a day for 5 days
-Genital herpes simplex: recurrent episode, HIV-infected patient, 1 g ORALLY twice a day for 5 to 10 days
-Herpes labialis: 2 g ORALLY twice a day for 1 day; separate doses by 12 h
-Herpes zoster: 1 g ORALLY 3 times a day for 7 days
-Recurrent genital herpes simplex, Suppression and transmission reduction: 1 g ORALLY once a day; 9 or fewer recurrences/year, 500 mg once a day
-Recurrent genital herpes simplex, Suppression and transmission reduction: HIV-infected patient, 500 mg ORALLY twice a day

If a doctor prescribed this to you then best bet will be to follow the instructions your pharmacy placed on the label.

I got diagnosed with herpes (type 2) about 4 yrs ago, whilst I was still attending college and had a foolish one-night stand. I realize lots of young women say this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before. I just made a mistake that one time and suddenly I felt like I was going to have to live with the implications for the rest of my life. The hardest part was feeling I could never date other men again. After all, who wants to go out with a girl that has sores round her "you know what" area? But since a friend shared this video https://tr.im/XGHJZ everything improved.

Not only was I able to eradicate all remnants of the hsv from my system in less than three weeks, but I was also able to begin dating again. I even met the guy of my dreams and I'm so fortunate to write that just last week, in front of everybody in a crowded restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed to me!!! This program gave me back the chance to be happy and experience true love again. Now I hope that I can help others too by sharing this story.

Check with your doctor. There are treatment programs where you take it daily for an extended period of time and then never again unless you have a breakout. There are also regiments where you take it for a short period of time. It depends on your dosage and orders. Just do what the doc says.

you take it according the doctor's order on the prescription, if you did not get it from a doctor you are a fool, valtrex can be nasty if you don't use it correctly.

It is usually prescribed twice a day for 2 weeks depending on your diagnosis. What are you taking it for? You should really ask your doctor since he prescribed it.
