I am not sure you can get any certifications prior to graduation. If you have graduated, in the United States you can take the Engineer in Training examination.

Aside from what the two previous E-Mails discussed, I know of no certifications that you can get as an engineer, however, there are many organizations that conduct seminars for engineers on specific subjects, such as pumps, compressors, process equipment design, HVAC systems design, management systems, etc. that are available for anyone to attend if you want to pay to attend the seminars. After you graduate and get a job, many times your employer may foot the bill for specific seminars that deal with your work.

You could investigate some of the technical educational seminars available on the web.

For mechanical engineering, post bachelors degree, you can take the Engineer-In-Training / Fundamental Engineers (EIT/FE) exam. Passing this test and meeting the requirements for experience one can then sit for the Professional Engineer's exam (PE). Passing this exam will get you a license in the state you exam for. This is also true to other engineering trades.

Passing the EIT/FE exam is good for all states. Each state has its own PE exam.

There are a number of other exams that can gain you certification, but it depends on what you are planning to do with your career. You can get certifications such as Energy Management (CEM) and LEED professional.

Some societies are now offering certifications as well. ASHRAE will be offering certifications in Healthcare Design, Sustainability, etc.
