And remember when mental illness was called being "possessed by the devil?" Amazing how much we can learn with science, isn't it?

True ADD is a chemical imbalance in the brain, alot of times kids get hopped up on sugar, yet do NOT have ADD.
I DO believe that ADD or ADHD is way over diagnosed and that Dr's should look into a child's/or adults eating history before labeling a person!
Dairy, and wheat products can also cause as many problems as sugar, and true ADD/ADHD can be helped with a very strict diet

My daughter has AD/HD, and it is a very real problem. Her actions have more to do with just being a kid, or eating alot of sugar or her caffeine intake. She cannot function properly. Her mind goes a mile a minute, and she does not know how to put all of that into perspective, so she gets restless, and angry. She acts out. I do agree however that ADD and AD/HD are the default nowadays as to whatever is wrong with a child, but for some it is a real thing.

People are going to tell you that it's a real chemical imbalance, yada yada yada. Yeah, it is, but do they think that activity (mental and physical), diet, and rearing don't play a role in how the brain chemically will work?
And the worst problem is, that for every single child who really can benefit from a diagnosis and some meds, there are 20 kids that doctors mis-diagnose.
Unfortunately, you have masses of non-medically trained parents who believe their child is ADD or AD/HD and go ask the doctor to cure or treat it, before a medically trained diagnosis. Not to mention the parents who are willing to do that to their child, but still feed them McDonald's and not make them exercise. Stick them infront of a TV or video game, rev their mind through visual stimulation, and then expect them to be able to sit calmly through a school day. (which must appear to be going at a snail's pace to them)
Have you ever heard of velocitation? That is when you come off the highway from driving, and you start to do 35 mph and feel like you're standing still. Yes, you can reprogram the brain with outside stimulus, and create a hyperactive monster.

Yes I remember those good old days..... when being a kid meant you acted up on your parents, when red cordial was a no no . When running around and making noise was acceptable.
I wish I had kept the newspaper article from a few months back.... it was found out that as much as 50 % or more of kids that were diagnosed with ADD or ADHD were MIS-diagnosed. So there have been a lot of kids out there being given drugs for no reason what so every.
Parents need to go back to disciplining their kids, and that doesnt mean by smacking them, just start punishing them by groundings, not allowing them on the computer/game console. no friends to visit after school etc. Dont talk to them like they are your equals, they are kids and need structure in their lives and discipline is one way of doing it.

No, it was before my time, but I do know that there was time when diseases were not thought of to be caused by germs, antibiotics were not yet inventing and before that people "hearing voices" wrote the bible or were granted sainthood in the Catholic church.
Is ADHD/ADD overdiagnosed? Yes, but so is bipolar disoder. That doesn't mean we should discount the existence, but rather question the diagnosis, perhaps get a second, third or forth opinion.

Nope, but I remember you when you were a retard...OPPS! you still are...
by the way ADD has nothing to do with hyper...that is ADHD. Get your facts straight before you go making fun of little children.

Yes, and instead of getting pills to make me be good, I got punished for inappropriate behaviour. Guess what - I never went to jail, never flunked any classes, never got pregnant while in school, didn't back talk my parents, didn't kill anyone. I still think pain, used appropriately, improves the memory. I'm setting myself up for lots of comments here - but been there, and done it. I learned that there ARE consequences in life - the sooner you learn that, the better off you are.

If you had a kid with it you just might understand just what your trying to talk about. As it stands, your making huge assumptions.
