All the airlines I've checked allow passengers to check in two suitaces. They can measure up to 23 kg (50lbs) and a total linear measurement of 158 cm. I have never been asked to pay more, although I'm sure I may have been over at one time or another. Do airlines really charge for overweight baggage?

Also, what is the cost if I'm over?

YES!!!!!! American Airlines charged me $28 for my duffle bag being 10 lbs. overweight. It really depends on the agent, though. My bag was overweight once before on A.A. and that agent didn't charge me. Bottom line, they will charge you because they can.

My experience is that airlines vary. I have travelled on Ryanair without being charged any excess, but the flight was only half full. Qantas have charged excess sometimes, but not on others. I have never been charged on Singapore Airlines, British Airways, Air New Zealand, LAN Chile and Kenya Airways.

I think the allowance you have shown is for flights to and from the US. There are different standards for all other routes based on baggage weight alone and for some classes, a limit of one bag.

The only other 'hard' limit I am aware of is the 32kg maximum for any single piece of checked baggage. This appears to be common across the industry, and rigourously enforced at check-in counters. They will make you unpack and remove stuff from a bag over that weight to bring it under 32kg. Not great fun in front of all the other pax!

Yes they do!!! But then again it depends on the person taking care of you suitcase. There are some nice people that could let it go if it doesn't go over the limit by too much. But some would definitly give you a hard time even if it was 3 pounds over. The cost varies depending on how much u r over by.

I just flew back to Arizona from Mexico on Continental Airlines: my bag weighed 61 lbs. and the limit was 50 lbs. I had to pay $25.00. It was worth it to me - I couldn't repack anything into a different bag.
