The focus will ultimately be the better car to own, it's worryingly reliable for a Ford, in that they are actually MORE reliable than a VW Golf. If you don't believe me, head on over to
www.reliabilityindex.co.uk
and see for yourself. It gives you a breakdown of all the manufacturers warranty claims for each model, so its purely statistics, no peronal bias in there at all.
Megane's are riddled with electronic gremlins. If you get one, make sure it's got the regular controls and not the squishy push button ones that plague my scenic, and lose the keyless entry and go for regular alarm fobs.
DCI engines are fantastic though, and better than ford units for refinement.
Megane is the nicer to drive, and is the better looking in my opinion.
Although, I don't know what age you're looking at, if new or nearly new, go drive the Astra Sporthatch diesel, it puts oth of them to shame.

Mégane by far!
The Focus is a dull, common car which does everything a car should...but the Mégane offers so much more.
Its controversial styling and 5 star safety rating are just a few things to tempt buyers. I have owned a Mégane for 2 trouble-free years now and I absolutely love it. Mine is the top of the range Privilège model which is amazingly well equipped. Half leather, automatic headlights and wipers, climate control and a 6 CD changer but the best feature is the Hands-free Renault card. This enables you to keep the card on your person when unlocking, starting and locking the car...you don't need to touch the card because the car knows you have it - very handy for when your arms are full and you have no idea what pocket the card is in!
My car has the 1.9 dCi engine which is extremely powerful yet very economical...the 1.5 dCi must be amazingly cheap then. The Mégane has thoughtful touches such as automatic door locking and automatic hazard lights (come on under hard braking to warn other drivers) which the Focus lacks. My friend hired a Ford Focus Ghia (Top model) when she visited and I was amazed to find how hard the seats were and how much kit it lacked compared to my cheaper Mégane!
Good Luck with whatever you buy...I completely recommend the Mégane...a brilliant car.
Oh, and one other thing..the new Mégane was European Car of the Year in 2003. The new Focus never scooped such an award.

As far as looks go, I would choose the megane over the focus. The ford has not undergone any major changes in the past few years and looks really boring, they are, however very well built.
The megane is more economical and looks more modern compared to the focus.

I believe Renault were found guilty of collaborating with the enemy in World War 2.
I am also told that, as a consequence, they are now prevented from becoming an entirely privately owned company. The French government insists on holding shares.
On principle, I would never buy a Renault.

Why are you considering a diesel Mégane, but a petrol Focus?
Do you not know which engine type best suits your needs?
Or is it a new Focus 1.6 TDCi?
Why do you give us the trim level (Zetec) of the Focus, but not for the Mégane (Authentique, Expression, Dynamique, etc.)?
There are a number of different power outputs for Renault's 1.5dCi engine.
The Focus will be more reliable, and be a more sporty drive. It also has a larger, better-shaped boot (assuming both are hatchbacks).
The Mégane will probably have more features, and is more stylish.

I've had both a Ford and a Megane. Loved the Megane, ran for ever! Now upgraded to a Laguna!
