my first reaction would be to get 2 more opinions. it is a very serious diagnosis and if not taken care of properly, can get very out of hand.
once you get your 2nd and 3rd opinion, you then need to take a good look at yourself and identify what trigures any episodes. and identify who are the best type of people to surround yourself with.
once you can do that, if you can stick to your medication, eat healthy, and do regular excercise (look after yourself) you shouldnt have too many problems.
but do yourself a favour and get 2 more opinions first.. then figure it all out.
i was diagnosed with bi polar and it has taken me many years to realise that there are things that trigure off my episodes.
but now i have figured it out, i stay healthy and look after myself. and have not had an episode for about 6months.
i also found the more doctors i spoke to, the better i understood myself and accepted myself

I have had Schizophrenia all my life just about.
Living with schizophrenia is easy as it is the easiest to treat of mental illnesses. It requires one pill a day, usually taken at bedtime, to control all the symptoms of it. The only thing the medicine does is lower Dopamine which a person with Schizophrenia has too much of.
You need to beleive the doctor when he tells you that have Schizophrenia. The first step of getting well is finding a medicine that has few side effects that will work for you. The doctor will decide which of the medicines is best for you. Make sure you go to all your follow up appointments and tell the doctor any side effects you're experiencing. He will change your medicine accordingly. If you take the older meds they are cheaper but just as effective, but sometimes they require more than one dose a day.
There are certain rules to follow when dealing with Schizophrenia to make sure you're always safe. The biggest danger Schizophrenics have is to themselves....they tend to become psychotic and wander away from home and lose themselves to the streets. Without medicine they never find their way home.
The rules are:
never skip a dose of medicine, it causes psychosis.
never stop your meds, particularly if you feel you are well and think you don't need them, stopping meds causes psychosis.
Limit caffeine and nicotine, they raise Dopamine levels which the medicine is trying to lower.
Stay off street drugs and alcohol, these things destroy everyone, not just Schizophrenics.
Don't think you can cure it or treat it by changing your diet, that is a wild goose chase too many people go on, it is not caused by something you ate or didn't eat.
If you adhere to the meds and follow the doctor's instructions, and discuss all your problems with the doc regarding the meds without constantly change meds, you will have no more trouble out of Schizophrenia than other people do from a headache.
Schizophrenia is treatable, responds favorably to medicine and when treated on an ongoing basis, -no one should be able to detect anything wrong with you because there won't be.
People who have psychotic flare ups tend to have not adhered to their meds. Also when you changing medicines, people tend to have flare ups that last for several weeks.
One medicine to avoid is Haldol, the withdrawal from it is absolutely brutal.

I've never had Schizophrenia, and don't actually know much about it medically, but I read this great website about it by a person who already has it, and is very articulate.. he wrote quite a bit about his experiences (first person accounts).
Like someone else here said, get a 2nd and 3rd opinion first off, and then.. maybe then accept that you may have a problem, and then take the steps you need to lead a healthy life.
