Because its the main idea that should be resident in every muslim's mind, peace is the aim of islam but what you see these days of violance is done by non true muslims these people used islam as a cover for thier political goals and brain wash young muslims into doing thing they think its right.
and wishing peace for everybody in this earth in the goal of True muslims.

Islam = Surrendering your soul to god and have faith in his will.

Salam (in Arabic) = Peace

and the proper way to salute any one if you are a muslim is to say "Salam Alaikom" which means peace be upon you. this is the islamic way of saying hello and its wishing peace and blessing to the person infront of you :)

i hope i explained it!

Its show the respect you have that person especially if you are talking about a Prophet (upon them peace) and there is also reward in it.

We pray for the peace and blessing of Allah to be upon the prophets of Islam. It is also like a sign of respect. We also say 'alaihi salaam' which has the same meaning.
Like, after mentioning their names:
Muhammad (Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam/PBUH - peace be upon him)
Jesus Christ (PBUH - peace be upon him/'alaihi salaam' )
