Why does the "Virgin" Mary have "no memory of the Archangel Gabriel's visitation, or of the swarms of angels, both telling her she is the mother of God?" he asks; "everything her son does comes to her as a complete surprise. What can he be doing talking to rabbis in the temple?" (Christopher Hitchens)

Well, you might as well ask why a 12-year-old boy didn't mention to his parents that he'd like to linger in the temple a bit, instead of letting them start making their way home and then become frantic when he wasn't with them?

Her son had disappeared, it took her and Joseph three days to backtrack looking for him, and by the time they found him in the temple I'm sure she was nearly out of her mind. Mothers get that way when they don't know where their kids are. When the kid turns up safe and sound, a mom doesn't know whether to hug him in relief or bawl him out for making her worry -- and often does both. How much heavier that weight must have been for Mary, simply because the son who had been entrusted to her and Joseph to raise was also the son of God.

So she did what countless moms have done: She blurted out the first thing that came to mind, the equivalent of "where have you been? We've been worried sick about you!". And her son basically pointed out the obvious; chill out, Mom, I've been here the whole time, where else would I be? It was easy enough for him to be calm and reasonable, but after three frantic days of imaging the worst -- as any parent would do -- I'm inclined to cut Mary a little slack for not "getting it" at that particular moment. After all, she was his mother. Any mother in the world understands this perfectly.

You are wrong on a number of points. First, the Bible NEVER said Gabriel was the archangel. The name of the sole archangel was Michael. (Jude 9)

Second, the Bible does NOT say "swarms of angels" told Mary anything. Gabriel was the only angel who approached Mary.

Third, Gabriel did NOT tell Mary she would be the Mother o God. At Luke 1:31, 32, 35, Gabriel said to Mary: "and, look! you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and you are to call his name Jesus. This one will be great and will be called Son of the Most High; and Jehovah God will give him the throne of David his father. For that reason also what is born will be called holy, God’s Son."

Why would Mary remember that she was the mother of God when the angel Gabriel told her that she would become the mother of God's Son?

Pastor Billy says: Hitchens should read some G. K. Chesterton and drop the Orwellian philosophy. Why would I goto an atheist for advise on anything spiritual?

Hitchens is known for his iconoclasm, atheism, antitheism, anti-fascism and anti-monarchism.

He is also known for his ardent admiration of George Orwell and Thomas Jefferson, and his criticism of Mother Teresa.

At the New Statesman he became known as an aggressive left-winger, stridently attacking targets such as Henry Kissinger, the Vietnam War and the Roman Catholic Church.

What a flake.

addendum: not only a flake but a blowhard and he has already had his 15 minutes of fame.

I've seen him talk and read some of his work from a mere business/financial standpoint, I wouldn't buy newspapers because of his articles.

enough said enjoy your delusions scapegoat baaaaaaa

The Virgin Mary was visited by the Archangel Gabriel before she gave birth to Jesus. She knew before He was born. I do not read the bible often, but it is stated in there. I don't know where you found this info. BUT I would do reseach on this comment before putting to paper. Or are you just spewing out garbage for the sake of being able to write something

You think maybe that a 16 year old girl has great depths of knowledge about what her Motherhood REALLY means, vis a vis bearing God the Son? PUHLEEEZE!

I'm a 63 year old theologian and I haven't got a clue!

Frankly, I'm surprised she handled it as well as she did. I'da been in hysterics most of the time, trying to keep Him safe, trying not to disappoint the Lord, trying to live as normal a life as possible.

Mary knew that Jesus was Messiah. I am sure His wisdom surprised Mary who sees Him as her son too.
