To learn the very basics, a little single shot bolt action with iron sights chambered for the venerable little .22 LR. Basically, the simpler the weapon, the simpler it will be to learn using it. And later on you can move on to weapons with more features and scopes.

Some people here are porbably going to say I don't know a damned thing, but opinions are like rear orifices: everybody's got one and theirs is the one that doesn't stink.

The way I say this is because .22's are inexpensive weapons and the ammo is dirt cheap. When you spend only 2 bucks for a box of 50 rounds, it comes down to 4 cents a round, as opposed to a lot of rifle calibers that are above a buck a round. Also, with a .22 you can learn the basics of marksmanship, stances, positions, basically how to shoot a rifle in the first place.

So, with inexpensive ammo and an inexpensive weapon, you can fire a lot of rounds just learning to shoot. Also, friends of mine who shoot a lot always start their practice with 1-200 rounds of .22 to warm up and then they switch to something more powerful.

But if you've never fired weapons seriously in the past, seek coaching. Members in gun clubs tend to be extremely helpful to new shooters and finding someone willing to teach you how to shoot should not be too hard.

I would start with a .22LR. you can find ballistics info on the loads you shoot and learn the basics. you should start with iron sites and move into a scope. a ruger 10/22 and a 4x scope can be had for about $200 if you shop it hard. .22 ammo is cheap too. For long range shooting out to 1000 yards I use .308. It's a NATO round so it's easy to find and reasonably priced. Savage makes great guns out of the box, winchester has some good ones too. A decent rifle will cost you about $450 and another $200 for a scope.
