It is amazing that people class Venezuela as a threat. Venezuela has an elected President who has already instigated programs to help the majority poor in the country and has already succeeded in bringing about almost 100% literacy to the country. The US tried and failed to overthrow a democtratically elected President several years ago. Now tell me who is the destabilising influence in the region.

As for stone K - Venezuela will no longer be poor. They have nationalised the oil industry which means multinational companies no longer make profits from Venezuelas oil but Venezuela makes the profit. They are nationalising most industries and using the money to develop and defend their country from imperialists like the US.

As for the educated leaving the country - there were no educated until Chavez came along. In a country where the huge majority are poor how can they be educated? Chavez is popular - he was elected by greater majority and has won referendums by greater majorities than any US leader or British leader.

John Pilger is bringing out his first docufilm today entitled "The War on Democracy" which charted the US influence in S. America over the last 50 years and how the US has contuinually tried to prevent democracy in S. America by installing and supporting puppet governments willing to aid big business at the expense of the citizens who actually live in the region. I bet not a single American has heard of this film and its impending release.

Nazi imperialism? lol

I know you think your being witty making a reference to the US being like the Nazis but obviously you failed History.

Buying old outdated Diesel subs from Russia? why not just arm a tug boat. Russian Diesels have been out classed for over 30 years.

So Venezuela who's economy is falling in to the tank, who is purging free speech and forcing the educated out is your idea of an idea country? lol try living there, I have family who would love to leave and you could take their place.

Venezuela should use that money to fix their problems not destabilize the region.

Ask Colombia about it's Battleship, The damn thing cost the country so much money they can't even afford to fire practice rounds without fear of bankrupting the country.

Now Venezuela is Playing pirates of the Caribbean, well when their subs sink (and they will) 5 gets you 20 the people they call to get them out will be the US.

It's a sad and transparent effort by Venezuela to become a regional power.

The claim that these arms purchases are meant to thwart a potential U.S. invasion is pretty hollow. A few submarines and a handful of fighter jets won't even deter a determined invasion by a superpower, let alone stop one. Look at how quickly the Americans swept over the conventional defenses of the Hussein regime. It's the insurgency that is giving America problems in Iraq, not the Republican Guard or the Iraqi Air Force.

What these weapons will serve to do is to intimidate Venezeula's neighbors and to consolidate Chavez's hold on the country. Those subs aren't going to take out a U.S. invasion fleet, but they could patrol for and sink ships of refugees fleeing the country once "socialism" gets in full swing.

For a leader who claims to care so much for the poor and for the people, I wonder why he is spending millions on weapons that could be used for his supposedly great social programs.

Go back and read the article you linked - then you may learn how to spell Venezuela. What do I think? I think it is sad that you would treat another democratically-elected socialist leader and his government in South America (remember Guatemala, remember Chile) as if they were "nazi imperialists."

The only nazis were those who overthrew the democratically-elected socialist governments in Guatemala and Chile.
