I am having trouble figuring out why the brake lights on my beetle won't work, the bulbs are fine, and replaced a few fuses. But still can't get the brake lights to work, the back up lights and turn signals all work. Any ideas??

before your throw more parts at it like the Master tech said Why not test the brake light switch than you can prove it is no good or your have other problems. Pull the plug off the switch and cross the wires that are across from one another u only need to do this on one of the plugs the other VW used as back up switch one wire will have power the other will be the wire back to the rear of the car.

if the lights work the switch is the problem
if not you have either no power to the switches or a problem to the rear of the car.

i do have these switches and they can be changed with out a hassle of changing everything

That car brake light switches are pressure operated and located on the brake master cylinder. If the brake cyl primary sleeve is worn out and you remove a switch you will not be able to rebleed the brakes properly. My reccomendation is get a new master cyl with new brake light switches already on it if you buy one from VW inventory or a ATE factory made brand should have swiitches. New M/C and full pressure clean new fluid all the wheel cyl will start leaking after that. The rubber brake Flexable hoses will burst. Get ready for a complete brake system rebuild. 34 years old car need love too...Good Luck
