People do it because people (especially Americans) are the most impatient, "right now," non-appreciative douches in the entire world.
They're so busy thinking it takes an extra four seconds to get the elevator, and they're so impatient, they hit the button eight times. Of course, they're not thinking, "Sure is nice to have an elevator, instead of having to walk up 15 flights of stairs."
Everyone wants everything RIGHT.... NOW! They can't relax and be patient.
Whatever.

No. even with the undeniable fact which you will as properly see an impatient individual back and back pushing the button, it does no longer something to velocity up the approach. as quickly as the button is pushed, the elevator is put in qeue and could bring about accordance to the place this is (above or under your floor) and could make stops in succession, finding on which direction it became already in qeue for. in spite of the undeniable fact that, it does not injury to push the button greater desirable than as quickly as and it could make an stressful individual experience greater desirable :)

on some older elevators, like in Manhattan new york, if you are going to have to stop on a floor, to let others on, if you press the button when the light for that floor on the panel turns off the doors won't open and you keep going without having to smell your neighbor.

Good question! I am guilty of that. I don't know why I do it. I know that it won't run any faster, I guess I get tried of waiting and I push again just in case it didn't get the signal.

it's a release of frustration that the elevator did not bring him to the floor within a duration of three seconds.

I hate it when people do that. I always have a fear the elevator will get stuck or something.

No. We just do it psychologically. it is an action to show your anxiety or frustration. But sometimes it slows down the elevator:)

That's because it is better than doing nothing but standing doing nothing. You can vent your frustration by pressing the button again and again and again and again...
