Its a difficult decision to let a pet go, sometimes they are not compatible with your personality, your home or family; no matter how hard you try to make a fit. When that kind of thing happens, then you are obligated to find someone, a family who are a better match than you were. I know, I've been there before and it broke my heart that the dog was not a fit. But, they are so sensitive that it would be cruel to keep them in a home where the owner can't stand them and hate to see them coming.
No, he is not too old to find him a good home. I have adopted dogs five or six years old, and we worked out beautifully, my only regrets were that I didn't know them when they were puppies, it would have increased out time together.
Don't worry about the need to find your dog a new home, and don't think of getting 'rid' of him, he'll sense it too. Just find him some one who can love and appreciate his specific personality.

Have you begun teaching your children at what age you should be gotten rid of? Should they use a gun, medication, or drop you off the bridge in a bag? Heaven forbid that you get too old,and spoil the Christmas party! Or worse yet, lose control of your bladder and mess the floor. But, I'm sure you'll teach your children the right way to do things by the fine example you set.

Contact a rescue - fast! Whatever the breed - look it up on the internet and find a rescue near you. That dog deserves to be living in a home with people who love it and care about it. If the dog indeed needs to go to the Rainbow Bridge - they will do it with the dog being held in their arms - not dropped off at the nearest shelter for it to be put to death. And don't EVER get another animal - you obviously don't care about animals. And when you get old - I hope your kids pick your nursing home in another state and via suggestions on the internet!

There are a ton of rescue groups on Yahoo groups. Check into them. You can even get breed specific if necessary. DON'T get rid of a pet just because it is the holidays for God sake. Be serious and get ahold of a rescue group now!!! That is what they do and they will be glad to assist finding your dog a forever home, for whatever that time span might be. Your dog deserves to live out it's life in a loving home.

what do u mean get rid of your dog? what if someone said get rid of you b/c you're too old. i don't know who gave you the GOD given right to make that kid of decision, but check back into reality, that's not your call buddy. however don't harm that dog, take it to the nearest rescue so he/she may have a chance at a new life with caring owners. i sure hope the dogs ok. oh, if the dog is in pain due to it's age take it to the vet and let a doctor make a decision.

Dont get rid of your dog just so you can get yourself away for a week or 2 its just not fair on your dog.
He has been with you all this time & now you just dont want him thats not the right thing to do!
Get a member of your family, a neighbour, there are loads of boarding kennels that will look after your dog till you get back.
Have you ever been to the dog holidays? were you can take your dog with you & still have the freedom to go sight seeing, enjoy yourself & the dog is included to?

Find someone who would love him and don't ever get another one. I hope your partner ( or kids )show more compassion and heart for you than you have displayed for your dog. You did not deserve to have the pleasure of a dog for all those years. Now that he's old, you want to dump him? People like you should be in some type of registry to prevent you from ever owning another animal.

You really make me feel like crying.
The poor dog has done nothing wrong except perhaps love the wrong people.
Personally I am so attached to my pets I never take holidays unless they are well provided for by loving friends.
If the dog is sick, infirmed and in constant pain then I might consider putting him to sleep. But if he is just old and a bit doddery then he deserves a well earned and comfortable retirement, just like his human friends.

Do you want to put it to sleep or give away?Don't know how you could consider either one.My dog is going on 16 and i could not think of doing either, she has given sooooo much pleasure over the years. If your dog is old maybe the LORD will take it some time in it's sleep, wouldn't that be a blessing?

I can't believe that!
If you are being serious then Why do you have a dog?
A DOG IS FOR LIFE, NOT JUST FOR WHEN YOU WANT IT!

If you really don't want your dog anymore than take him to a re-homing centre, if you live in Dorset (UK) take it to the Margaret Green Foundation. They will find a new, loving home for the dog and if they can't they won't put him down, at least he'll enjoy his retirement!
