When someone interrupts a call THEY MADE TO YOU to take a second call.

My daughter called me Tuesday to tell me Happy Birthday, no card, no gift, no E card, just a phone call while she is backing out of a parking lot. Call waiting signals another phone call, WHAT IS VOICE MAIL FOR ANYWAY, and takes the call (an advertiser) and ends our call after about 30 seconds.

Apparently I did not do as good a job with her as I thought.

The next person who calls me and takes another call in the middle WILL be hung up on. It is truly insulting that another call is more important than finishing the first out of common courtesy.

WHAT DO YOU THINK??

IT WAS NOT AN EMERGENCY CALL SHE TOOK IT FOR AN ADVERTISMENT CALL.

I find it interesting that almost none of you think call waiting is RUDE AND THOUGHLESS.

This is a matter of courtesy to anyone.

Americans lived many years more politely without call waiting. Rarely it is EVER URGENT.

Call waiting...you mean call interruption! I usually hang up, because this really annoys me out of people. Since she is your daughter you should tell her about it!

Did she know it was an advertiser when she picked it up?

Now, if someone puts me on hold when they called me for call-waiting, I would sit and take advantage of the virtue of patience. Then, I would inquire courteously about what was going on that it interrupted the call. If it turned out to be an advertiser that was particularly persistent, I would nod and comment on how bothersome they can be.

However, if I was hung up on or released from the conversation because of a call from an advertiser, I would simply look at it as this person did not find their conversation with me as important as they did with the advertiser and speak to them about it later.

i really dont like call waiting because if youre on the phone and the other person takes the second call then have the time they forget to get back to you. ive had that happen many times with me. if i am on the phone and the call waiting beeps i tell the person that i need to get off the phone or i wont answer the second call.

The problem is that the person may be expecting an emergency phone call so you don't know their reason for taking that other call.
Your daughter may have been having a hectic day as well so it's important to try and keep that in mind.
Have you considered sharing your feelings with her?

Happy belated birthday. I am typing this to you and ignoring my ringing phone because I want to give you my attention. *smile* I understand what you are saying. It is depressing to think that after we do for our children, they don't appreciate it or us. Hopefully your weekend will be wonderful and you daughter will come through with something, a thought or word, that makes your heart smile.

Discuss this with her. I find it anoying as well and do hang up. I tell them to call me when they are busy.

Had someone call me, to put me on hold while she answered her front door and blathered away to her neighbour (for more than a few minutes. I hung up.

Very rude thing to do.
You shouldn't blame your self though. Cell phones seem to have turned off most peoples' manners and common sense.

Arthur is right.
There might have been a valid reason, so don't jump to conclusions. But in general it is quite rude to do what she did. I am sorry that she hurt your feelings.
