for toothache. A friend of mine has given me co-codimol capsules that were prescribed for them. I have tried different pain-killers but nothing gives any lasting relief, but I am tempted to try one. Are they just a stronger pain-killer as I have never heard of them? They are 1000mg per tablet.

Co-codamol tablets contain paracetamol and codine.
There are 2 strengths - 500mg paracetamol plus 8mg codine OR 500mg paracetamol and 30mg codine.
They are great painkillers, but it is important not to take too many as they contain paracetamol. 2 tablets every 6 hours is more than enough. Oh, and the codine may make you constipated!

Co-codimol is good if you are not allergic to Codiene -

You could call your dentist and tell them that your pain has gotten worse - they might be able to get you in sooner. you can also - go to your GP - if you are an NHS patient you can call NHS direct and they can advise you further and possibly give you a place to go Now instead of waiting.

I have just gone through the same thing - mine is an infection in more than one tooth - still waiting for appointment for oral surgeon - I have been on Anti-biotics and taking Ibrophine - if you are not allergic to codiene you can go to the chemist to get the over the counter pain killers with codiene added

Also while at home if you are in extreme pain and can't get to the dentist right away - you could use a cold compress or ice pack on the area that hurts - (don't use heat as if you have an infection the heat will make it worse and make you swell even more)

You need to get some sort of anti-biotic as soon as possible to take the infection down or away as that is what may be and probably is causing the pain.

If you have not been to the dentist you could also call your GP as you can get in faster there and tell them you are awaiting an appointment with a dentist they may be able to give you some sort of anti-biotic and possibly something stronger for the pain.

NSH Direct number is 0845 4647

If you call them they may be able to advise you where to go for now and help you to get into the dentist faster

Hope you feel better soon

Personally I would not take any medication that had not been prescribed to me by my Doctor. I took Co-codimol after I had a car accident for a dislocated collar bone and they knocked me for six. To say they are strong would be an understatement!!!! The pain did go but I felt really spaced out.

Why not try taking a cupfull of whiskey and hold it on the bad tooth for a few minutes, ive herd that it is ment to numb the area for a while.

Or failing that make an appointment at your Doctors.

Good luck and hope you feel better soon :-)

Make sure you only take 1 every 6 hrs because thats a lot of drug for your body to cope with.
Get some clove oil and rub it on your gum. It doesnt smell great but it numbs the area of pain. It worked for me better than any pain killer.
Readily available from pharmacies and inexpensive.

Further to Emma W answer which i good, nothing will give you lasting relief except the visit to the dentist.
However for further pain relief you could try dissolving an aspirin directly onto the affected tooth or dab oil of cloves onto it.

At the drug store in the dental section you can buy a little (1 inch by 1 inch ) box of a soft wax to mold over the painful tooth. That helps keep the liquid leakage out of the root.

Good Luck.

I had severe tooth ache and co-codimol were the only painkillers that worked. They do cause drowsiness and do not take with alcohol as they will knock you out. They are best taken before going to bed.
