Vatican procedure requires that a potential saint perform one miracle to be beatified and a second to be canonized. Can anyone especially knowledgable Catholics explain in plain English what is "beatified" and "canonized"?

By beatification the "venerable" receives the title of "Blessed" allowing for limited public veneration, i.e., Mass and Office, restricted to a specific locality or religious community.

With canonization the "Blessed" receives the title of "Saint" and veneration, (Mass and Office) is universal throughout the entire Church.

Beatification is the first step toward canonization. After you die, if you are beatified, the you are called Blessed. Canonization is finalizing Sainthood. When you are canonized then you are callled a Saint. There are many saints in Heaven that have not been canonized here on Earth.
