Nobody knows for sure, but it seems to be hereditary. Some kind of brain abnormality.

It's not caused by drug abuse, although certain drugs can cause similar symptoms like hallucinations and delusions. Some people can have permanent brain damage from drug abuse, but that's not the same thing as schizophrenia. It can be confusing, though, because a lot of people with schizophrenia abuse drugs.

Somebody else answered "untreated celiac disease." I find that hard to believe. I work for a mental health agency and we have thousands of clients with schizophrenia who don't have celiac disease. My wife is a dietitian for a state mental hospital and has made diets for patients with celiac disease and schizophrenia. I have never heard of anyone's symptoms of schizophrenia stopping after they got put on a gluten free diet. My wife has done this several times, so why do the patients still need treatment for schizophrenia?

Honestly, there is much evidence to show that there is a link between schizoprhenia and untreated Celiac Disease.

Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disease in which a person cannot digest gluten, a protein in wheat, rye and barley. When this is combined with other genetic factors, and otehr environemntal factors, perhaps such as alcohol, I think schizoprhenia can be kicked into high gear. Not to say taht all with schizo are untreated Celiacs, but just think how amazing it would be if they'd test them for CD, put them on a gluten free diet and see if that doesnt help??!!
For more info on CD see below.
