I am a photography student that may be doing an MA (masters degree) next year at LCC. I want to make a photographic documentary on a person who has been affected by the use of cannabis and have developed psychosis because of it, or has helped in you developing the condition.

I understand this topics is very sensitive, but many of the people I know that use cannabis are reluctant in believing that cannabis can do any harm to you (they also disregard emphysema as a disease from cannabis use).

Thanks for your help

for the most part in this forum you are dealing with people who aren't necessarily a cohort that will be sensitive to the reality of cannabis use. I can assure you both on a professional and personal level it DOES cause a range of mental illnesses which vary in severity. A family member developed depression bordering on bi-polar (not yet diagnosed) due solely to cannabis use - he even acknowledges that the link between developing his illness and smoking.
As with any addiction (it is addictive), there is always an element of denial that one is doing anything harmful. Hence some of the posted replies.
There has also been several murders linked with cannabis use.
professionally, as a nurse for the last 30 years, I have seen the sad results of continual abuse of this substance. Its out there, folks, believe it!
There have been many studies made about cannabis use, but I advise caution with some. I'm sure with your studies so far you know how to discriminate the truth from bias. The medical journal section of your university library is a good place to start, and as a member of the university you'll be able to access a wide amount of info online.
before starting a study you also need to seek approval from the ethics committee at the university to ensue that the questions asked and study undertaken is ethical and appropriate.

Lung problems, yes. Schizophrenia, no. It doesn't happen. Yes, there are recent studies that suggest there is a correlation, but not one says that it is a cause. Do you know how many people smoke pot even daily without developing schizophrenia or psychosis? Do you know about the early stages of schizophrenia? Often it's hidden and even a trained doctor wouldn't know. Usually, in early stages of mental illness people will self medicate with drugs including marijuana.

The studies asked if a person has ever smoked marijuana and a personal subjective opinion. When someone is stoned or high, they may feel somewhat 'psychotic' but this is not a real psychosis and does not cause psychosis once the high is over. Just like marijuana causes short term memory loss and learning problems, but only while a person is high. After the high is over, learning and memory returns to normal as does touch with reality.

You need to do your research.

Sorry mate, been smokin since i was a kid, (Now 32)
No problems..

Why are people adamant cannabis is harmfull?

Peanuts have been known to KILL PEOPLE,
lets Ban peanuts...??

A friend of mine is allergic to Wheat, Lets ban bread?

Dont Taint the masses with the select few...

As was said earlier, Why not look into Alcohol,
Much more dangerous and has hugley more detremental effects health and mental wise.

(P.s Both European and US governments have spent £££'s and $$$'s looking into harmfull effects of cannabis and come up short, but strangely we dont hear these because its against what the government want.)

Hemp (or cannabis) is the COMPLETE plant,
The US Decleration of independance was written on hemp / cannabis paper and George Washington was a Hemp (or CANNABIS) Cultivator!!!

Many regular drug users (not usually the weekend warrior) have an underlying condition that they are basically "self medicating" for. Whether it is ADD, depression, or pschizophrenia etc., many of these people are finding a means to an end through the street pharmacy. Funny thing is that for many people, street drugs are more affordable and easier to access than prescription drugs. So, with marijuana especially (unless used in conjunction with other drugs that are mind altering), I am thinking you will be hard pressed to find someone with psychosis resulting solely from its use.

Psychosis is a lot more likely to happen due to heavy alcohol use, or amphetamines, or cocaine, or steroids.

No offense, but are you trying to document the development of psychosis, or that cannabis is dangerous?

i ask because if you are trying to document the development of psychosis, it would be easier and more ethical to record interviews over time with many people, in various levels of psychosis, and combine it into a film.

to watch and interview one person over time as they plunge into psychosis, doing nothing to help, but recording the descent and their life falling apart is unethical and even dangerous to yourself, to the person, and to others.

Maybe when you do your Masters you will be able to get advice from your tutors as to how to approach the subject of finding a subject for your documentary. It being a sensitive subject and all that.

Many people I know treat their symptoms and refuse to adress the causes of their mental torture. Because they conveniently prefer to believe the pills actually make them better. It's easier on the ego.

Psychosis happens when the ego dissolves. It can be a very enriching experience.
Not one that i would like to share with a wanna be Masters student on the internet though :-)

I haven't had psychosis because of cannabis use, but I've had psychosis. Cannabis is a depressant, of course it can cause mental harm.
