As a system administrator of 15 years, there is no way to download or visit a web site without us knowing where you have gone and what you have done. Not a single request, file, email, etc passes through the network without us being able to track it. However, unless your action is endangering the company, appears to be illegal, or we have been specifically asked to monitor a person, the information is normally not monitored that closely. But it is there, and can usually be tracked by for several weeks or even months.

In a work environment, you can't. Even if you can, there's still a chance of getting caught and being fired or facing disciplinary action. And you mention things that aren't dangerous, like music and books. Only they are dangerous - if you illegally download music onto a company computer, and the company gets audited and it's found, they're facing a fine of up to $150,000.00 for each file that you illegally downloaded and stored on their computer.

If you have to ask how to do something without being discovered, that's a clue - don't do it.

Companies have system administrators just for people like you who abuse company property. Use your own time and resources, not those of your employer. Chances are anyway you would be restricted from downloading anything.

A switched-on system adminstrator will know exactly what you're doing, even if you do it by proxy. Don't risk it. Do it at home.
