chances are you will not get any money for them ... a couple of people have said to take them apart, DO NOT do this it is technicaly against the law in canada and the us. most scrap yards will not pay for them and some may actually charge for taking them. this is due to the fact that the refrigerant (not called freon , freon is a brand name owned by dupont/honeywell , calling it freon is like calling all shoes Nike you dummies) the refrigerant when reclaimed by the very expensive equipment that is required to do this , although once it is reprocessed , is worth quite a bit if it is r12 (chances are your units use r22 which production is to start to be scaled down in 2010 and be completely phased out by 2020) the problem is it cannot be resold until it has been reprossesed at a chemical recycling facility and the reclaimed refrigerant actually costs the people that are sending to these facilities money to have it recycled and they don't get the refrigerant back. if the units still operate i suggest you either give them away or try to sell them for a small amount of money otherwise do the earth a favour and take them to a scrap yard that will pump the refrigerant out and have it recycled as both r12 and r22 are significant ozone depleting substances and every little bit of help we can give the environment is worth it.
hope that helps...

Yes it can be recycled. I would put it in the alley for the one of many scrap trucks that cruise the city. I would put it out there the day AFTER your garbage pickup to give the scraper a 6 day window to pick it up. These guys provide a valuble service as almost EVERYTHING (95%) they pick up goes directly to a recycle facility. They in return recieve a small monetary payment. Even stuff that no one wants, old rusty pipes, old storm windows,
just about anything metal, they can take. I take all my aluminum cans put them into a bag with handles and hang it on the fence in the alley(after garbage day). Someone takes it every week. Thats fine. I tried to save my cans and take them back but I had 3, 55 gal drums full of uncrushed beer cans in the hot garage and it took up alot of space and smelled like a tavern, and when I took them back I got $7. the recycle guys can have my $7 for all the work they do.......

yes, there should be recyclable metals in the units.
Usually aluminum, copper and steel.
You get the most money if the unit has been purged of the refrigerant then dismantled to separate the metals.
DO NOT cut any tubes before the refrigerant has been removed.
The refrigerant is recyclable too... it can be pumped to a storage container, cleaned and reused.
R-12 (if it has that) is VALUABLE now (in the US for sure... other countries most likely)... some older AC units can use nothing else and it is now illegal to make R-12 or to import it, so all R-12 that can be reclaimed will be wanted by people who work on AC and refrigeration units.

Old air conditioning units contain FREON and in the US Freon's release and disposal is strictly regulated by the Air Pollution Act.
Scrap metal yards are required to have freon containing appliances (e.g. air conditioners and refrigerators) certified that they freon has been removed BEFORE they can accept them.
And yes, as one person said the Freon may have value...
Do the right thing for the enviroment . . . be sure to find a scrap yard that has the right equipment to capture and recycle any freon, certifiy it empty prior to handling the scrap metal disposal..

Ring around your local scrap yards.
The units have an electric motor, a compressor and a cooling section at least that are metal.
The worst is that they will say no as it isn't work their time to take them apart.
I suspect, that at best, they will just take it off your hands for no charge. whilst there is money in scrap, there isn't that much after you pay someone to disassemble stuff like these.

Low voltage can do it. But a contactor is a special kind of relay. It is spring loaded to open and close faster to reduce arcing. Because of the higher power draw there will always be some arcing. My guess is it was just a bad contactor. It only has to not close properly one time and burn the contacts then it will go out before too long. I wouldn't worry about it unless it happens again in short order.

You will have to call around and find a scrap facility which can recover the freon from the inside. Most do and yes, I got rid of a couple this way also.

I know there's quite a bit of copper in them. If you take it apart and get the copper out you can get a pretty penny for it. I don't think the junk yards will take it unless all the freon has been removed from it.

Yes you can.
You can take them to a metal yard. the condenser is made of aluminum. They pay per pound and the price for aluminum just went up.
hope that helps
