Thought 1.) beach, picnic cost: hot dogs and condiments: (assuming something like a parking fee included, gas for car, beach toy, suntan lotion/blocker : $40.00 (assuming beach 20-40 miles away, one way)

Time to spent, could be 4-8hours depending on how tired he gets and how well he stays around. Much better than a 30 sec ripping of a present.

Does he has a best bud? Have him invite him to go with you (Watch his eyes and mouth go wide with excitement over the thought, its his day ya know) but if you don't get a lot of time with him, skip his best bud and have it just you two. After the beach, 4-8 hours later, go for dinner and then some ice cream, then the ride home, which he'll probably sleep through.

I can't think of a better thing to do that'll be more fun than a cellophane wrapped package. If its rain that day, hey make an alternate date and buy him a Frisbee or a beach ball to make him think about the day. (This is where you do the cellophane)

I agree with some of the other people...the things that my kids remember most are the times that we have spent together doing things. Maybe go somewhere or do something that you have never done with him before. Sometimes even the smallest thing can mean a lot to a child and quality time is better than a piece of junk toy that will be broken in a couple of weeks.

Take him out on some adventure trip he likes - maybe somewhere outdoors or some exotic country as long as it is something new and very interesting for him. Kids will take these wonderful experiences with them when they grow old - something wonderful they can look back into, and definitely something that will make them appreciate you more because you made them experience it.

Spend time with him. Take the day off on his birthday and just spend it with him doing the things he likes - watch a movie, play ball, video games and buy his favourite meal :)
