The price will generally keep going up on the popular routes as you get closer to the date of departure. The less popular routes won't suffer with price increases in the same way (as they will have already been priced highly due to their unpopularity).

If you know when you want to fly to New York, book as early as possible to get the cheap deals (as it is a popular route). If you're not bothered when you fly, keep checking the internet and fly when you see a deal you like.

Usually the price goes up as you get closer to the departure date. If you are flexible on your flight times/dates you can save lots. Also, avoild direct flights if you can. One layover, even if for an hour or two, can cut a couple hundred off a long trip.

Keep looking. Fares change every day and good deals pop up out of nowhere. Remember though, make sure that your ticket deal has the taxes included. Taxes can really eat you alive. The cost of the ticket that you quoted is way to high. You might try specific airline web sites. They are usually cheaper that the "discount web sites" and allow you more flexibility. Also taxes are always included.

Last minute. I went to NY in March for 6 days which included flights and hotel for £313. We booked about a week before.

Depends a bit where you're travelling from. I'd advise differently from Amsterdam vs. from Greece, for example. Can you update your question to add your departure airport? Meantime, also try http://www.farecompare.com -- use the flexible dates search to find the cheapest fares. I'll check back later and might have more info if you post your departure airport.

you could wait until there is a sale on from a particular airline, otherwise just look on as many web sites as possible now as you can make quite a saving.
