G'day
I know that you intend to brag abt Perth. However, since you do ask the question, I will then decide to answer :)
I have been living in Melbourne for 16 years since I migrated. Wellll... where should I start?
1. First of all... some people do not like the weather in Melbourne (you can have 4 seasons in one day). However, if you read the first article from The Age newspaper, you will find out that the weather is still more preferable than the other cities. Sure you can have 42C day in summer, but almost immediately you'll get a much cooler weather pretty soon afterwards. It is very rarely that you got 2 or 3 consecutive days of hot weathers (unlike some other cities).
2. Melbourne is a city of diversity. If you are a newcomer, and you do not look 'Anglo-Saxon', you do not feel like an 'alien', since you can find almost every race in the world walking in the city. They are both immigrants and overseas students.
3. THE FOOD!! Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Thai, All-you-can-eat, African, Lebanese, Mexican, Sea Food... anything else? All available and lots of them in a very-very-very affordable price
4. Pretty good public transport system. With one ticket, you can switch from train, tram and bus. They do not always come on-time, but still reliable and improving (www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au).
5. SHOPPING!!! Original branded clothing sold very cheap. There are even shopping tour, where the participants are taken to retails outlets just for shopping. Big temptations for ladies.
6. Crime rates... just read the second article on the bottom.
7. Cost of Living... I'll say it's second most expensive city after Sydney. Altho I have to say that some cities in Queensland can be more expensive to live.
8. Night Life... hmmmm... I'll say the centre of nite activities will be Crown Casino and Docklands. Altho there are still plenty of cafe's and clubs scattered around the suburbs as well.
9. Tourist attraction. This is the area that I think Sydney is better than Melbourne, since it has most of it's attraction within its suburbs. Most Melbourne attraction are pretty much out of Melbourne, such as the gold mines in the cities of Bendigo and Ballarat, The Great Ocean Road, Lakes Entrance, Grampians, skiing in Mt. Buller etc.
Running out of ideas, but I hope that I can at least give you some more informations that have been provided by you earlier.
BTW... the tallest building in Melbourne is now the Eureka Tower, where they have just opened the observation deck on level 88 (Rialto's observation deck is on level 66). Website: http://www.eurekalookout.com.au/
I've been living in Melbourne for 16 years, visited some other capital cities in Australia and still love Melbourne 10/10, I guess same thing like how you like Perth ;)
ADDITION:
Hi Forky. Yes I do. But I think if I got a good thing, I'll stick to it ;)
Mind you... only in this question that I mention abt Eureka tower, so I'm not just copying and pasting my previous answers. I do read the questions and I modify as required. Sorry, but my English is not very-very-very good-lahhh... LOL

The answer depends on what takes your fancy. You have the capital cities like: Brisbane which I assume you are from Sydney which is pretty, all that rock poking out of the ground everywhere, and the harbour. Melbourne is ok to visit shopping Adelaide is different Perth is laid back Darwin, haven't been there Hobart, neither been there And then, there are Regional Cities, like: Newcastle, Geelong, Albany, Bunbury, Broome, Alice Springs etc? If you wish to see something different then check out any of the regional airlines that fly via Alice Springs/Ularu and then you could fly onto anywhere: Kalbarri, Monkey Mia, Exmouth, ElQuestro, or the Bungle Bungles!

Firstly .. why on earth are so many people taking your question the wrong way ... YOU didn't ask us what YOUR favourite city was .. Had you done that and THEN told us THEN THAT would have been silly ..
BUT YOU DIDN'T .. you merely told us what your favourite city was and why and then asked us WHAT OUR FAVOURITE CITY was and WHY ...
some people either can't comprehend what is being written or they just got out of the wrong side of the bed this morning and are in such a grump they feel the need to have a go at you .. .
OK and secondly .. I was about to give you a rave about Melbourne ... which I can do unbiasedly as I was born and grew up in New South Wales ..
BUT i really can do no better than Batako.. brilliant answer!!
and it shall receive from me a thumbs up AND the best answer Vote( if you don't select one yourself that is)

To h3ll with the state capitals. The best cities to live in Australia for real adults are the large provincial towns, eg Ballarat, Dubbo, Mackay etc. These places are going great. Anyone with half a brain can make good money in them, while not having to put up with traffic congestion, impossible parking and having to live an hour's travel from their work.

I have, at one time or another, lived in Darwin, Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Adelaide and have visited Brisbane, Hobart and Perth many times. As far as I am concerned, the best of the lot is Sydney although I have enjoyed myself in all of them. Perth is too expensive and too far from anywhere else. Hobart is delightful and seldom gets a mention so I'll give it a boost.
Sydney does not have a high crime rate compared with the other Australian cities, they are all much the same. Despite the rantings of Alan Jones and John Laws (both criminals), Sydney has a low crime rate and it is falling. There was a State election recently so Laura Norder got the usual outing but it is all political blather.

Best city to live in is Brisbane. The traffic is not as bad as Sydney, the weather is divine throughout the year.
The best city to visit is definitely Cairns. There is so much to do. Dive the Great Barrier Reef, walk in the Rainforests and just enjoy the lovely warm weather all year round.
