cowboydoc...being a sniper isn't about killing. its about safety. without snipers in SWAT the members would not have good real-time Intelligence. and they can report where the suspects are. and i come from a military family. my father was a sniper in the USMC. and my brother was a grunt., but he was killed in Iraq in 2005.

Actually you are correct about being a sniper. The military sniper and the SWAT sniper have very different roles The military sniper is there to specifically kill some one. They are there to pick one particular person or to eliminate enemy soldiers that can't be reached by conventional means.

The SWAT sniper is there for tactical recon, usually from a vantage point. He is also there as a last resort resource to protect officer, hostages or onlookers, and subdue a suspect.

In my opinion the SWAT guy has to be more technically prepaired. He may be used in a variety of ways. He may have to drop kill the suspect because the situation has reached critical mass. What is he shooting through? Auto glass, apartment windo glass, bank glass.

He may be called on to just knock the suspect down to facilitate rescue of hostages. Or he may need to remove a weapon from a suspects hand.

Each of these scenarios require different ammunition and the knowledge that the situation could change quickly.

You need a quick, agile, analitic mind. Knowledge of your equipment. Strong math skills and an eye for detail.

Absolutely required ! ! You must be able to put on you uniform and be a trained professional with absolute confidence in his skills and convictions. Then you must take off you uniform, walk out of the police station and become John Q Citizen, daddy of 3 with a wife who needs hugs and a lawn that needs mowing. You have to be able to turn it on and off at will.

Trust me, I know what happens when the two get mixed.

First you have to become a Cop...then your department SWAT team usually hold testing to see if you are capable of becoming a member of the SWAT team. Then once you are on the SWAT team you usually take a test to become a sniper. Then you are sent to Sniper school. Some schools vary from 1 week to 5 weeks. Usually a department will let you test for SWAT after 1-2 years of emolyment.

If you think being a sniper, or having someone in your crosshairs and pulling the trigger is something you want to do, then join the military and volunter for the duty.

If, after seeing the damage the bullet does to someone's brains you are somehow affected , you MAY qualify for civilian duty.

Just remember, that image should stay with your the rest of your life. If it doesn't or you don't really care, then you have no business being near a gun, much less as a sniper.

Taking a life, regardless of from what side of the issue you are on, is NOT something to take lightly. Nor is it something that goes away.

SWAT qualifications vary from department to department. The best source of info is the recruiting section of the police dept. you want to join. Generally, you have to be on the job at least 5 years, exhibit sound judgment, and psychologically fit, be in tip top physical shape. You sure this is what you want? There is no glory in killing, even justifiable killings. When you kill someone, they don't get up again, like on TV. Think about this.

you need to become a police officer first. get good grades go to the academy and target practice as much as you can.most departments will not take you from the academy straight into SWAT so you will have to have a outstanding record while working other areas of the department. Maybe you could inquire with your local department and speak with some of the SWAT officers.

I would like to ask you first, youngster, why would you want to kill someone? do you know what that's like to live with?

These people, S.W.A.T. members are usually chosen from former military people like Army Rangers or Special forces people that are highly trained previously. They don't just come out of the civilian ranks.
One of the question for killing people might just cancel you anyway, this is not a criteria for joining a SWAT team, killing.

If I were you I would look at my reasons and maybe think about another career.
