Okay, I don't know how this relates to diet and fitness but I'll give it a shot.

They send you a bogus check drawn on a bogus account which means the cheque is worthless. Let's say it's for $500.00.

You deposit the cheque to your account, keep 10% and forward the $450 dollars to an untraceable Western Union address. A few days later your bank calls you and tells you that the cheque you deposited is worthless and unless you want to be charged with fraud, they want their money back.

You're now poorer by $500, plus you have a potential black mark on your credit and the crooks have made away with $450 of your money.

Don't listen to these people and don't trust them.

What happens is that you put the cheque into your bank and the cheque will clear, you will then pay them the money and think that everything is OK. a Little while later you will get a call from your bank saying that the cheque was fake and that you now need to pay the bank back the money that you withdrew to pay the con artist.

Not nice, if someone that you don't know is going to trust you with money it is because they know that they are going to fleece you

The scam is that you deposit the $ and then send them some back and then they send you the rest. You send them "payment on taxes" which is usually acouple thousand dollars and they are supposed to send you like $250,000 or more back after you pay your taxes. But they will tell you the only way you can pay them is through a wire transfer. Which means that about 2 weeks after the bank figures out those checks were fraudulent, and taking actions against you and your account, you have already sent the cons their money through the wire transfer and you have no way of getting it back. They are very tricky, they almost got my friend, they sent him fake US postal money orders and everything it fooled the bank, but I saved him from making a fool out of himself, I smelled a scam and made him take the MO to the post office they had no record of those serial numbers. I saved him thousands of dollars and a trip to court. Check out this web site for countless list of scams going on in the world.
I think you're suposed to turn those letters and emails over to the FBI?

Do not get involved with scams like this. The person doing it will try and trick you into giving out your personal information to steal your money or your identity. It is best to not respond at all when you get any requests like this. Delete all Emails before you read them if you do not recognize who they are from or if the subject on the Email looks weird to you. Hang up on anyone who calls you on the phone with requests like the one you mentioned. Throw away all mail with this type of request as well. It is always better to be safe than sorry. The world is full of con artists, you have be careful so that you will not become their next victim.

Thats a scam. Checks maybe they have stolen and they con you into cashing them and you get caught. If you aren't caught then good for you and them. Maybe also when you deposit it into your account they will get the information from the check when they get it back from the bank. They will have your signature from the check on the back. . I'am just speculating.
Don't even try doing it. It's to good to be true. I really don't know . The check won't be any good also and you send them money from your account. So therefore, you are out of money.

the money order will be flagged at some point as a counterfeit no matter how real it looks. But you could be held responsible for the funds. and all the headaches of dealing with investigators and so on. you keep $100 and send 400 cash to some p.o. box somewhere..they have the cash and disappear. you have trouble..hope this helps.

How do they make money from this con?
Nice "Diet and Fitness" question.....

Very simple...they give you a check, you put it in your bank account and give them some of the money.
Then, of course, 10 or 15 days later, the check is proved to be a fake so it gets returned and your bank just cancelled the deposit since the check is bad and even slap you with return/cancellation fees or what not in the process.

Just tell those scumbags that you will put their check in your account but you just need like a month to make sure it clears and then, only then, you will give them their money back.
Believe me, they will not want to wait...

Even if you cant figure out how they are conning you they are if for no other reason because the world doesn't give hand outs. Nothing in this world is free. My rule is if I'm ot sure dont do it because even if they say you can keep some of the money it will be a lot more expensive when your a victim of identity theft.

they can get your account details from the check when it is sent through their bank.
This is a popular scam that has been going on for a long time.

I had one company contact me through the mail and sent me a check for over a thousand dollars and said to deposit it in my account and I would be a secret shopper for them.
I had the bank verify the check first, and there wasn't even a bank named that in California. It was supposed to be out of JFK airport. There is no such thing. It was all a scam, and I actually spoke to these people.
Just goes to show, be careful or be sorry.

isn't that called money Laundering

Or maybe once you have done one or two cheques that clear, they will ask you for cash of a larger one and promise to send the cheque on, but once you send the money you will NOT get that cheque
