Very very important intelligent question.

Questions like this only lead people to nirvana or truth.

Truth can be learned/realized only in the presence of a master/guru.

Even words uttered by a master will not be helpful to realize Truth.

But it will show the path.
Studying, researching the scriptures will help only up to certain level.

Presence of a master is a must to realize truth.

That is why gurukulam was prevalent in India.

Buddha was presenting the truth to his disciples.

He knew that after his death whatever he taught is going to be just words.

So he didnot write any books.

To explain this, a, small story from his Life.
Many disciples and public were waiting in a hall to here his preaching.

Buddha was sitting there silently for more than 2 hours.

He didnot even uttered a single word.

Suddenly one his disciple Bhodhi Dharma
Laughed loudly.

Buddha took a rose and gave it Bhodhi Dharma.

And Buddha left the hall.

Though Both were silent, yet there was some conversations.

Buddha gave some message to all,
but bodhi Dharma only able to receive it
and through laugh he answered.

Later Bhodhi Dharma became prime disciple and guru next to Lord Buddha.

Firstly in his period writing was not given enough importance and non of the great gurus wrote any book.

Secondly in Indian tradition Shruti or some thing which is heard had been given prime importance and so the great Vedas made more than 10000 years back were also written very late.

And most important is that when lord Buddha used to speak he was always in a state of trance with eyes closed. What he said was written down by his diciples and later copied to be sent to diffrent regions all over.

Words have always been given more importance in Indian Sub continent if you remember people say 'Maine Jubaan de de hai' that is I have comitted verbally.

Firstly, most founders of any religions did not write down their teachings. Most of the texts were written by their disciples, who tokk with them, the task to spread the word.

Furthermore, in Asian religions, enlightenment cannot be taught verbally, as the disciple, although can understand the gist of the sayings, but whether they can accept wholly depends on the person.

Hence, one can see that's there are more hermits in Buddhism, Taoist or Hinduism. One of the so called founders of Taoism, did write a book. But, the starting verse of the book was "The Way that can be spoken, is not the true Way. The Name that can be Named, is not the real Name"

There has been a rich history of Buddhist writings, going back to the very teachings of the Buddha himself.

Any teacher will tell you the truth in a degree you can understand. Teacher knows exactly what you need to hear, what veil of misunderstanding you need to clear out. Also, teacher tell you the truth with the great energy of love wheather you feel or not. It's just impossible to teach the truth through book - since we (book readers) are depending our own thought and imagination while reading book.

Well, since his teaching does not include something that is imaginative, it is simple for people to accept and use their own intelligence to digest it.

His teaching wasn't confusing enough to require a book. It hardly matters because christians stole most of his snappy one-liners and put them in the bible, pretending jesus said them.
