I think it's time we Americans started sticking it to Mexico. Rampant political corruption and the influence of the Catholic Churche's views on birth control, have kept our neighbor a country in turmoil. In Mexico, you are either very rich or very poor; there is almost no middle class. The thing that makes the USA unique in the world is that it has a thriving middle class: this is also the engine that drives our continued prosperity. Instead of building walls and talking about deporting 12 million people, while Mexico sits on its hands, a change in trade policy, tied to repatriation of illegal immigrants and Mexico securing its own border, could be the best way to pressure Mexico to conduct itself as a responsible nation and worthy neighbor. Let the rich people of Mexico figure out how to keep their fortunes if the USA imposes a 400% tariff on Mexian goods.

Food for thought: The benefits of Mexican imports do not outweigh the cost to this country of Mexico's failed political and economic policies. Securing our border alone will cost more than all the money made through continuation of NAFTA. The billions and billions it will cost to deport 12 million people should not be borne by the American taxpayer. Clearly, we need to undermine the Mexican government in order to bring about change. I feel very sorry for poor people and I think the best way to help them is to pressure their native country to change. Mexico's answer: They have threatened the United States, saying they won't even try to stop the flow of illegal drugs in to the USA if we do not adopt immigration reform. Presidente Fox, my answer to you would violate Yahoo Answer's community guidelines!

A tariff would actually make the situation WORSE, believe it or not. Mexico wouldn't even be able to compete on the American market with a tariff that high, which would mean that there'd be virtually no jobs in Mexico at all. Yeah, you'd stick it to the rich people, but you'd also stick it to the bottom end of the economy.
Free trade with Canada and Mexico is the best thing that ever happened to those countries. So many jobs in North America depend on free trade. I respectfully disagree with your argument.
The person above makes a few incorrect arguments. 1. While it's true that free trade benefits the United States tremendously, restricting free trade would devastate Mexico. 2. The world doesn't like to buy US goods? I know many countries don't like the US, but almost every country buys American goods. American products are unbelievably popular. You only need to go... anywhere to see that. If Mexico can't trade with the United States, it'll never be able to make up those numbers by trading with Europe or anywhere else. Europe has high protective tariffs on imports - it's not the best market for other countries.

this is a great question and food for thought.
I wonder if someone has actually done a study or there is an analysis on cost vs. benefit.
If Mexico could take care of their own, then US can be in better shape at least in terms of illegal migration situation.

Well, Why dont you go ahead and invade the world ...starting with military action against China? jejej
what a silly remark cant you see how well is Europe doing thanks to its unification? you think that 50 years ago when the rich countries of EUrope decided to include Spain and Portugal didnt notice that those countries were much much pooorer and corrupt than they were? and now they all enjoy a good life because the rich countries helped the poorer countries become richer. When this happened the countries that used to be poor and now had money began buying products from the countires that helped them out..since making their economy grow...how much is the dollar worth against the Euro these days?
Besides...if America did that to Mexico..dont worry,...china will be more than glad to begin relations with Mexico...Mexicans arent hostile to china becaiuse china has never invaded Mexico and taken half of its terroitory like America did...so there AMerica would have a chinese influenced country..just like it did with Cuba diuring the cold war. and then Mexico would sell its oil to China and not to America...jejeje I would love to see that happen!
Besides you know what dumping is? thats what america does to MExico..thats why there are so many mexicans in america....farmers...
AMerica subsidies AMerican farmers so their products are chepaer than mexican products and since there are no taxes..they sell better. so the Mexican farmers end up selling nothing and moving up north....in a way you can blame your goverment subsidies to farmers in America as one of the reasons for illegal Mexicans in America.
listen people like you are really dangerous when in office....just like your president Gorge Bush...thankgod Americas role in the world is coming to an end and China is rising...the world is tired of people like you with power.

mmmmhhh... let's see... we stick it to Mexico by putting the country in worse shape than it already is... you basically want to increase the poverty rate so that not only do the current poor keep coming here, but now we would get even MORE, right? sorry but your solution lacks real knowledge about what the economic condition of mexico is. the US has a LOT of money invested in manufacturing in mexico (check where Ford gets its parts for the vehicles). also, mexico has OIL!!! and a lot of it... and the US get a lot of that OIL.
How about conitnuing to increase programs like NAFTA so that Mexico's economy conitnues to improve and in turn create jobs for their poor? you can't help a neighbor by putting them in worse position than they already are. We can help Mexico improve its economy and it turn help OUR immigration dilema.

Hey, thats a great answer!
You do know they supply the US with 1/3 of our total oil every year!
You gonna lay a 400% on that as well? Start closing the gas stations!
It isn't only Walmart. China is financing the war in Iraq, and we will be giving them money in interest every year.

While I understand your frustration I would think it would be a much better idea to tackle our trade polocies with china first as we are slowly selling our very souls to that country with the help of the traitorous company walmart.
Walmart wants to destroy our country for profit.

repudiating NAFTA would actually hurt more the U.S. than Mexico. Mexico can export their products to welcoming countries in Europe, while no one in Europe really likes American goods.
